COOLANT (for Engine) REPLACEMENT

REMOVE V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
1. Place both hands on the sides of the cover as shown in the illustration, lift the cover to detach the 2 clips near the front in the order shown in the illustration, and then lift the cover further to detach the rear clip and remove the cover.

  If the cover is lifted rearward or forward and to the right or left at the same time, the cover may be damaged.
REMOVE ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER
1. Remove the 4 clips and engine room side cover.
REMOVE COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL
1. Remove the 7 clips and cool air intake duct seal.

DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT

CAUTION:

Do not remove the radiator cap or reservoir tank cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.

Loosen the radiator drain cock plug.

Remove the reservoir tank cap and drain the coolant.

Tech Tips

Collect the coolant in a container and dispose of it according to the local regulations.
Loosen the 2 cylinder block drain cock plugs and drain the coolant from the engine.

ADD ENGINE COOLANT

CAUTION:

Do not remove the radiator cap or reservoir tank cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.

Tech Tips

Before starting the engine to warm up the engine, turn the A/C switch off.

Tighten the 2 cylinder block drain cock plugs.

Torque:

13 N*m { 130 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf }
Tighten the radiator drain cock plug.
Remove the reservoir tank cap and radiator cap.

Add coolant through the radiator reservoir tank filler opening until the coolant reaches the "B" line and install the reservoir tank cap.

Note

Never use water as a substitute for engine coolant.

Tech Tips

TOYOTA vehicles are filled with TOYOTA SLLC at the factory. In order to avoid damage to the engine cooling system and other technical problems, only use TOYOTA SLLC or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology (coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology is a combination of low phosphates and organic acids).

Add engine coolant to the coolant filler opening and install the radiator cap.

Tech Tips

Press the No. 1 and No. 2 radiator hoses several times by hand, and then check the level of the coolant.
Put the engine in inspection mode Click here. [*1]
Warm up the engine until the thermostat opens. While the thermostat is open, circulate the coolant for several minutes. [*2]
CAUTION:
- Wear protective gloves.
- Be careful as the radiator hoses are hot.
- Keep your hands away from the radiator fans.
Note
- Immediately after starting the engine, if the radiator reservoir tank does not have any coolant, perform the following: 1) stop the engine, 2) wait until the coolant has cooled down, and 3) add coolant.
- Do not start the engine when there is no coolant in the radiator reservoir tank.
- Make sure that the needle does not show an abnormally high temperature.
- If there is not enough coolant, the engine may overheat.
Tech Tips
- Press the No. 1 and No. 2 radiator hoses several times by hand, and then check the level of the coolant.
- The thermostat open timing can be confirmed by pressing the No. 2 radiator hose by hand, and checking when the engine coolant starts to flow inside the hose.
Stop the engine, and wait until the engine coolant cools down to ambient temperature. [*3]
Check the coolant level in the radiator reservoir tank. [*4]
Tech Tips
- If the coolant level is below the "Low" line, add coolant through the radiator reservoir tank filler opening until the coolant reaches the "B" line and repeat steps [*1] through [*4].
- If the coolant level is above the "FULL" line, drain coolant until the coolant level is between the "FULL" and "LOW" line.

INSPECT FOR COOLANT LEAK

CAUTION:

Do not remove the radiator cap or reservoir tank cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.

Note

Before performing each inspection, turn the A/C switch off.
1. Remove the reservoir tank cap.
2. Fill the radiator with coolant and attach a radiator cap tester.
3. Put the engine in inspection mode Click here.
4. Warm up the engine.
5. Using a radiator cap tester, increase the pressure inside the radiator to 137 kPa (1.4 kgf/cm², 20 psi), and check that the pressure does not drop.
  
  If the pressure drops, check the hoses, radiator and engine water pump for leaks. If no external leaks are found, check the heater core, cylinder block and cylinder head.
INSTALL COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL
1. Install the cool air intake duct seal with the 7 clips.
INSTALL ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER
1. Install the engine room side cover with the 4 clips.
INSTALL V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  Attach the 3 clips in the order shown in the illustration to install the V-bank cover.
  Note
  - Securely attach the clips.
  - If the clips are forcibly attached or struck with an object, they may be damaged.
  - Do not apply any oil to the tips (round portions).
