DESCRIPTION
In the VVT system, the appropriate intake valve open and close timing is controlled by the ECM. The ECM performs intake valve control by performing the following: 1) controlling the camshaft and camshaft timing oil control valve, and operating the camshaft timing gear; and 2) changing the relative positions of the gaps between the camshaft and crankshaft.
| DTC No. | Detection Condition | Trouble Area |
|---|---|---|
| P0016 | Deviation in crankshaft position sensor signal and camshaft position sensor signal (2-trip detection logic) |

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
Tech Tips
Read freeze frame data using an intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0016 AND P0017)
Connect an intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Turn the tester on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
Read DTCs.
| Result | Proceed to |
|---|---|
| P0016 | A |
| P0016 and other DTCs | B |
Tech Tips
If any DTCs other than P0016 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (OPERATE OCV)
Connect an intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Start the engine.
Turn the tester on.
Warm up the engine.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1).
Enter the following menus: VVT Change Angle (Bank1) and VVT OCV Duty (Bank1).
Check that the VVT Change Angle (Bank1) varies when operating the OCV using the tester.
| OK |
|---|
| The VVT Change Angle (Bank1) value and engine speed vary. |
Tech Tips
If the VVT system can be operated through the Active Test, it can be assumed that the VVT system is operating normally.
