AIRBAG SYSTEM PRECAUTION

Tech Tips

  • In the airbag system, the front airbag sensor, side airbag sensor assembly, door side airbag sensor, rear airbag sensor, front floor side airbag sensor, rear floor side airbag sensor and center airbag sensor assembly are collectively referred to as the airbag sensors.

  • The steering pad, driver side knee airbag assembly, front passenger air bag assembly, curtain shield airbag assembly and front seat side airbag assembly are collectively referred to as the SRS parts.

  1. PRECAUTION FOR HANDLING SRS SYSTEM

Failure to carry out service operations in the correct sequence could cause the SRS to unexpectedly deploy during servicing, possibly leading to a serious accident. Further, if a mistake is made when servicing the SRS, it is possible that the SRS may fail to operate when required. Before performing servicing (including removal or installation of parts, inspection or replacement), be sure to read the following items carefully, then follow the procedures exactly as indicated in the repair manual.

  2. PRECAUTION FOR DISCONNECTING CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

    1. Before starting operations, check for DTCs, turn the engine switch off and disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal, then wait at least 90 seconds.

      CAUTION:

The SRS is equipped with a backup power source, so if work is started within 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal, the SRS may be deployed.

      Note

When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Click here.

    2. When the cable is disconnected from the negative (-) battery terminal, the memory will be cleared. Because of this, be sure to make a record of the contents memorized in each system before starting work. When work is finished, adjust each system to its previous state.

  3. GENERAL PRECAUTION

    1. Be sure to use the Toyota electrical tester for electrical inspections.

    2. Follow the caution on the labels attached around the system.

    3. Never disassemble any of the SRS parts.

    4. If any of the SRS parts are dropped, or if any cracks, dents or other defects are found, replace them with new parts.

    5. Never use SRS parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace them with new ones.

    6. Do not expose any of the SRS parts directly to hot air or flames.

    7. Even in the case of a minor collision that does not cause the SRS to deploy, the SRS parts should be inspected.

    8. Do not apply grease, detergent, oil or water on the SRS parts.

    9. When operating or storing the SRS parts, avoid places with high temperature (ambient temperature of 93°C (199°F) or higher for an airbag and 80°C (176°F)or higher for a pretensioner) and high humidity, and place them away from electrical noise.

    10. When scrapping the vehicle equipped with an SRS or disposing of single airbag or pretensioner, be sure to deploy the SRS parts using SST.

    11. Never inspect the resistance of the SRS parts.

      CAUTION:

It is very dangerous because current from the tester may deploy the SRS.

  4. PRECAUTION FOR DISPOSAL OF SRS PARTS (NOT DEPLOYED)

    1. Never dispose of the SRS parts that are not deployed.

    2. Perform the operation outdoor flat place where is safe to operate, and where it will not create a nuisance to nearby residents.

    3. As the sound of SRS operation is loud, be sure to inform nearby residents before the operation.

    4. When deploying the SRS parts, always use SST and perform the operation at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the SRS parts.

    5. An airbag or pretensioner may be activated by static electricity. To prevent this, be sure to touch a metal surface with your bare hands to discharge static electricity before performing this procedure.

    6. Do not face down the airbag deployment side when operating the airbag.

      CAUTION:

A force of more than 1 ton might be applied in the direction shown by the arrow in the illustration.

  5. PRECAUTION FOR DISPOSAL OF SRS PARTS (DEPLOYED)

    1. SRS parts become extremely hot when the airbag is deployed, so do not touch them for at least 30 minutes after deployment.

    2. Do not apply water, etc. to any SRS parts with a deployed airbag.

    3. Use gloves and safety glasses when handling any SRS parts with a deployed airbag.

    4. Seal the deployed SRS parts in a thick clear plastic bag when disposing them.

    5. Always wash your hands with water after completing the operation.

  6. PRECAUTION FOR SRS PARTS

    1. Keep the deployment side of an airbag facing up even when the airbag is temporarily removed during the operation.

      CAUTION:

If the airbag unexpectedly deploys with the deployment side is facing down during an operation, it might lead to a serious accident.

    2. When storing an airbag, do not put things on it or pile up airbags.

  7. PRECAUTION FOR FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY (PRETENSIONER)

    1. Do not touch the area around the retractor even when the pretensioner is temporarily removed during the operation.

      CAUTION:

If the retractor unexpectedly operates and the belt is retracted during an operation, it might lead to a serious accident.

    2. When storing a pretensioner, do not put things on it or pile up pretensioners.

  8. PRECAUTION FOR SPIRAL CABLE

    1. Be sure to center the spiral cable when installing the spiral cable and installing and removing the steering wheel Click here.

      CAUTION:

If the steering wheel is turned without the spiral cable centered, the cable may break.

  9. PRECAUTION FOR AIRBAG SENSORS

    1. When the SRS parts are deployed (including when only an airbag or pretensioner is deployed) in the event of collision, be sure to replace all sensors (front airbag sensor, side airbag sensor assembly, door side airbag sensor, rear airbag sensor, front floor side airbag sensor, rear floor side airbag sensor and center airbag sensor assembly) as a set.

    2. When connecting or disconnecting the airbag sensor connectors, ensure that each sensor is installed in the vehicle.

  10. PRECAUTION FOR WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR

    1. All wire harnesses except unexposed harnesses in the engine room are colored yellow.

    2. As special connectors are used, be careful when handling them.

  11. WHEN SERVICING A DAMAGED VEHICLE

    1. Before using a welder on the vehicle, remove the SRS parts before the operation.

    2. If shocks are likely to be given to an airbag sensor, remove it before the operation.

    3. Never expose an airbag sensor directly to hot air.

  12. CONDITIONS WHEN THE INSPECTION OF SRS PARTS IS NECESSARY

    1. When the vehicle is damaged in a collision including when the SRS is not deployed.

    2. When an SRS system DTC is output.
