  4. REMOVE FRONT WHEELS

  5. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER

  6. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER

  7. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER (for Front Side)

  8. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER (for Rear Side)

  9. REMOVE REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER LH

  10. REMOVE REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER RH

  11. DRAIN ENGINE OIL


    1. Remove the oil filler cap.

    2. Remove the oil drain plug and gasket, and drain the engine oil into a container.

  12. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT


    1. Loosen the radiator drain cock plug and drain the coolant.

      CAUTION:

      Do not remove the reserve tank cap, cylinder block drain cock plug and radiator drain cock plug while the engine or radiator are still hot. Pressurized, hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.

      Tech Tips

      Collect the coolant in a container and dispose of it according to the local regulations.

    2. Remove the reserve tank cap.

    3. Loosen the cylinder block drain cock plug. (except TMC Made)

  13. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (for Automatic Transaxle)


    1. Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain ATF.

    2. Install a new gasket and the drain plug.

      Torque:
      47 N*m  { 479 kgf*cm, 35 ft.*lbf }
  14. DRAIN CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSAXLE FLUID (for CVT)

      Using a 6 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the overflow plug and gasket from the continuously variable transaxle assembly.

      Using a 6 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube from the continuously variable transaxle assembly and drain the continuously variable transaxle fluid.

    3. Using a 6 mm socket hexagon wrench, install the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube to the continuously variable transaxle assembly.

      Torque:
      1.7 N*m  { 17 kgf*cm, 15 in.*lbf }
    4. Temporarily install the gasket and overflow plug.

      Tech Tips

      Reuse the old gasket. The plug will be removed again to adjust the fluid level.

  15. REMOVE WINDSHIELD WIPER ARM COVER

      Using a screwdriver, disengage the 2 claws and remove the 2 windshield wiper arm covers.

      Tech Tips

      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    4. Remove the battery and battery insulator.

      Disconnect the No. 1 vacuum switching valve connector and wire harness clamp.

    2. Disconnect the fuel vapor feed hose from the No. 1 vacuum switching valve assembly.

      Disconnect the purge line hose from the No. 1 vacuum switching valve assembly and air cleaner hose.

      Disconnect the ventilation hose.

      Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector.

    3. Remove the bolt and radiator reserve tank assembly.

  32. REMOVE V-RIBBED BELT

      Using SST, slowly turn the V-ribbed belt tensioner clockwise.

    2. Remove the V-ribbed belt from each pulley and slowly return the tensioner.

      Note


      • Make sure that SST and other tools are set to the tensioner securely.

      • When compressing the V-ribbed belt tensioner, slowly turn the tensioner.

      • Be careful not to pinch your fingers between the parts.

  33. REMOVE GENERATOR ASSEMBLY

      Disconnect the generator connector from the generator assembly.

    2. Open the terminal cap.

    3. Remove the nut and disconnect the wire harness from terminal B.

    4. Remove the bolt and wire harness clamp bracket.

    5. Disconnect the wire harness clamp.

      Remove the 2 bolts.

  34. DISCONNECT NO. 2 RADIATOR HOSE

      Disconnect the No. 2 radiator hose.

      Remove the nut and disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the control shaft lever.

      Remove the clip and disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the control cable bracket.

      Disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the control cable bracket.

  44. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY (for CVT)

      Remove the nut and disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the control shaft lever.

    2. Remove the clip and disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the control cable bracket.

    3. Disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the control cable bracket.

  45. REMOVE ECM

      Disconnect the wire harness clamp.

    2. Remove the 3 bolts and disconnect the ECM.

    3. A01CCEK

      Push the locks on the 2 levers, then raise the levers, and disconnect the 2 ECM connectors.

      Note

      After disconnecting the connectors, make sure that dirt, water or other foreign matter does not contact the connecting parts of the connectors.

    4. A01CCPS

      Remove the 4 screws and 2 ECM brackets.

  46. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS


    1. A01CDEG

      Remove the nut and disconnect the battery cable.

    2. Remove the engine room relay block cover.

    3. A01CAOE

      Disconnect the 2 connectors from the engine room relay block.

    4. Using a screwdriver, unlock the 2 claws and separate the engine wire from the engine room relay block.

      Loosen the bolt of the positive (+) cable.

    6. Using a screwdriver, unlock the 2 claws.

    7. A01CB2B

      Slide the positive (+) battery cable as shown in the illustration.

      Remove the bolt and 3 clamps, and separate the wire harness protector from the bracket.

      Remove the bolt and clamp, and separate the ground cable from the body.

      Remove the bolt and clamp, and separate the ground cable.

      Disconnect the connector and separate the ground cable.

  47. SEPARATE COMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY WITH PULLEY

      Remove the bolt and bracket.

    2. Disconnect the connector.

      Remove the 3 bolts and nut.

    4. Using an E8 "TORX" socket wrench, remove the stud bolt and compressor with pulley assembly.

      Tech Tips

      Secure the compressor and hoses off to the side instead of discharging the A/C system.

  48. REMOVE FUEL TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY

      Disengage the claw and open the No. 1 EFI fuel pipe clamp cover.

      Tech Tips

      Do not remove the No. 1 EFI fuel pipe clamp from the pipe.

    2. Pinch the fuel tube connector and then pull out the fuel main tube.

      Note


      • Check for any dirt and foreign matter contamination in the pipe and around the connector. Clean if necessary. Foreign matter may damage the O-rings or cause leaks in the seal between the pipe and connector.

      • Do not use any tools to separate the pipe and connector.

      • Do not forcefully bend or twist the nylon tube.

      • Check for any dirt and foreign matter on the pipe seal surface. Clean if necessary.

      • Put the pipe and connector ends in plastic bags to prevent damage and dirt contamination.

      • If the pipe and connector are stuck together, pinch the tube between your fingers and turn it carefully to free it. Then disconnect the hose.

  49. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY

      Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.

      Remove the 2 bolts, 2 compression springs and front exhaust pipe assembly.

    3. Remove the gasket from the exhaust manifold converter sub-assembly.

  50. SECURE STEERING WHEEL

      Secure the steering wheel with the seat belt in order to prevent rotation.

      Tech Tips

      This operation is useful to prevent damage to the spiral cable.

  51. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET

      Remove the 2 clips and column hole cover silencer sheet.

  52. SEPARATE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

    2. Slide the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly toward the steering column assembly.

      Note

      Do not separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering intermediate shaft assembly.

      Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering intermediate shaft assembly.

    4. Separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering intermediate shaft assembly.

  53. SEPARATE NO. 1 STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

      Push clip B towards center of the hole to release it, then push on clip A and remove the No. 1 steering column hole cover sub-assembly from the body.

      Note

      Do not damage clip A and B.

  54. REMOVE FRONT AXLE SHAFT NUT LH

      Using SST and a hammer, release the staked part of the front axle shaft nut.

      • Insert SST into the groove with the flat surface facing up.

      • Do not damage the tip of SST using a grinder.

      • Completely unstake the staked part before removing the front axle shaft nut.

      • Do not damage the threads of the drive shaft.

    2. Using a socket wrench (30 mm), remove the front axle shaft nut.

  56. SEPARATE FRONT SPEED SENSOR LH

      Remove the 2 bolts and separate the front flexible hose and the front speed sensor from the front shock absorber and steering knuckle.

      Remove the bolt and clamp to separate the front speed sensor from the steering knuckle.

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  58. SEPARATE TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY LH


    1. Remove the cotter pin and nut.

    3. Using SST, separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.

      CAUTION:

      Apply grease to the bolt threads and the tip of SST.

      Note


      • Be sure to tighten the string firmly to secure SST to the steering knuckle to prevent SST from falling off.

      • Install SST with the center nut so that A and B shown in the illustration are parallel. Otherwise, the dust cover may be damaged.

      • Be sure to place the wrench on the part indicated in the illustration.

      • Do not damage the front disc brake dust cover.

      • Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.

      • Do not damage the steering knuckle.

  59. SEPARATE TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY RH

    Tech Tips

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

  60. SEPARATE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH

      Remove the 2 bolts and separate the front disc brake caliper assembly from the steering knuckle.

      Note

      Use wire or an equivalent tool to keep the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.

      If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon wrench (6 mm) to hold the stud bolt.

    Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

      If it is difficult to disengage the fitting, tap the end of the drive shaft with a brass bar and a hammer.

      • Do not deform the dust cover.

      Set the engine lifter.

      Note


      • Install a height adjustment attachment and plate lift attachment onto the engine assembly with transaxle.

      • Do not position a height adjustment attachment or plate lift attachment onto the front crossmember sub-assembly.

      • Securely support the engine assembly to prevent it from turning upside down until it is secured to an engine stand.

      • Do not perform any procedure while the engine assembly is suspended because doing so may cause the engine assembly to drop, resulting in injury. However, the engine assembly needs to be suspended when it is installed to or removed from an engine stand.

      Remove the 4 bolts and front crossmember sub-assembly.

    3. A01CERO

      Remove the bolt and 2 nuts, and separate the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH.

    4. A01CF8V

      Remove the through bolt and nut, and separate the engine mounting insulator LH.

    5. Carefully remove the engine with transaxle from the vehicle.

      Note


      • Make sure that the engine is clear of all wiring and hoses.

      • While lowering the engine from the vehicle, do not allow it to contact the vehicle.

    Perform this procedure only when replacement of the engine mounting insulator is necessary.


    1. A01CCRH

      Disconnect the clamp, and remove the bolt and bracket.

    2. A01CD7Q

      Remove the 4 bolts and engine mounting insulator LH.

    Perform this procedure only when replacement of the engine mounting insulator is necessary.


    1. A01CEKR

      Disconnect the 4 clamps, and remove the nut and bracket.

    2. A01CDBP

      Remove the 3 bolts and engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH.

  85. REMOVE FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET

    1. Remove the 3 bolts and front engine mounting bracket from the continuously variable transaxle assembly.

  86. REMOVE REAR ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET

    1. Remove the 3 bolts and rear engine mounting bracket from the continuously variable transaxle assembly.

  87. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY (for 1.6 kW Type)


    1. A01CBGO

      Disconnect the starter connector.

    2. Open the terminal cap, remove the nut and disconnect the starter wire.

    3. Detach the wire harness clamp.

    4. Remove the 2 bolts and starter.

  88. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY (for 1.7 kW Type)

      Disconnect the starter connector.

    2. Open the terminal cap, remove the nut and disconnect the starter wire.

    3. Detach the wire harness clamp.

    4. Remove the 2 bolts and starter.

  89. REMOVE NO. 5 WATER BY-PASS HOSE (for CVT)

      Remove the No. 5 water by-pass hose.

  90. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY (for Automatic Transaxle)

      Remove the 4 lower side mounting bolts.

    2. A01CETI

      Remove the 5 upper side mounting bolts.

    3. Separate and remove the automatic transaxle.

  91. REMOVE CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY (for CVT)

    1. Remove the 9 bolts and continuously variable transaxle assembly from the engine.

      Note

      To prevent damage to the knock pins, do not pry between the transaxle and engine.

  92. REMOVE DRIVE PLATE AND RING GEAR SUB-ASSEMBLY

      Using SST, hold the crankshaft.

      Remove the 8 bolts, rear spacer, drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly, and front spacer.

  93. INSTALL ENGINE STAND


    1. Install the engine to an engine stand.
