Accelerate vehicle with accelerator halfway open or more starting from a speed of 120 km/h (192 mph) or more for 2 minutes (make sure gear is fixed and does not change) The pressure is 55 kPa below the Target Boost Pressure for 40 seconds at an engine speed of 2800 to 4400 rpm (2 trip detection logic).
  • Turbocharger sub-assembly

  • Turbo motor driver

  • Turbo motor driver power source

  • Extremely low battery voltage (P0560 output simultaneously)

  • Disconnected pipe between turbo and intake manifold

  • Disconnected MAP sensor hose

  • Throttle valve stuck closed

  • EGR does not close

  • Exhaust system or intake system modified (leading to increased pressure loss, etc.)

  • Manifold absolute pressure sensor

  • Injection system (reduction in fuel injection volume)

  • ECM

Tech Tips

If DTC P0299 is stored, the following symptoms may appear:

  • Variable nozzle stuck open malfunction

    • Lack of power

    • Vehicle surge or hesitation under light or medium load

    • White smoke

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

Note

After replacing the ECM, the new ECM needs registration Click here and initialization Click here.

Tech Tips

Comparison of the Data List items MAP and Target Booster Pressure during acceleration under medium to high engine speeds can be used to determine the state of the problem.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0299)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / DTC.

    4. Read the DTCs.

  3. INSPECT TURBOCHARGER SUB-ASSEMBLY (for Bank 1 or Bank 2)

    1. Check the turbocharger sub-assembly (for Bank 1 or Bank 2) Click here.

      Tech Tips

Check if the VN is stuck, if there are abnormal noises from the turbo (impeller is damaged), if there is turbo shaft rattle, and if the turbo shaft rotates smoothly.

    NG
    OK
  4. CHECK CONNECTION OF VACUUM HOSE

    1. Check the vacuum hoses of manifold absolute pressure sensor connections.

    NG
    OK
  5. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (MAP)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / MAP.

    4. Read the value.

      Standard Value
      Condition Standard Value
      Idling 90 to 102 kPa
      3000 rpm 100 to 150 kPa

    NG
    OK
  6. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (ACTUAL THROTTLE POSITION)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Actual Throttle Position, Actual Throttle Position #2.

    4. Read the value.

  7. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (ACTUAL EGR VALVE POS.)

    Tech Tips

For vehicles without EGR valve, perform troubleshooting from the next step.

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the EGR Step Position or Control the EGR Step Position #2 / Data List / Actual EGR Valve Pos. or Actual EGR Valve Pos. #2.

    4. When changing the Active Test value from 0 to 100%, check that Actual EGR Valve Pos. or Actual EGR Valve Pos. #2 smoothly changes to the set opening angle.

      Standard Value
Value smoothly changes to within +/-10% of set opening angle.

      Tech Tips

      • EGR valve closed: Actual EGR Valve Pos. is 0%.

      • EGR valve open: Actual EGR Valve Pos. is 94.9%.

    5. Next, after the engine is warmed up, stop the engine and wait for 15 seconds. After that, start the engine again and idle it for 30 seconds. Then stop the engine and wait for 15 seconds. After starting the engine again, read the Data List values while idling.
