Tech Tips

  • Sensor 2 represents the sensor located upstream of the DPF catalytic converter.

  • Sensor 3 represents the sensor located downstream of the DPF catalytic converter.

  • If DTC P2084, P2086, P242B and/or P2467 is stored, the following symptoms may appear:

    • White smoke

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The ECM compares the values from the No. 2 exhaust temperature sensors (B1S2), No. 4 exhaust temperature sensors (B1S3), and No. 3 exhaust temperature sensors (B2S2), No. 4 exhaust temperature sensors (B2S3) with the engine coolant temperature when the engine switch is turned to on (IG) after the vehicle has been left soaking for 10 hours or more. If the difference is 400°C (752 °F) or more, a DTC indicating an exhaust gas temperature sensor malfunction is stored and the MIL is illuminated (2 trip detection logic).

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Note

  • After replacing the ECM, the new ECM needs registration Click here and initialization Click here.

  • After replacing the fuel supply pump assembly, the ECM needs initialization Click here.

  • After replacing an injector assembly, the ECM needs registration Click here.

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P2084, P2086, P242B OR P2467)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    4. Read DTCs.

  2. READ VALUE USING GTS (EXHAUST TEMPERATURE)

    1. Leave the vehicle as is for 1 to 2 hours with the engine stopped.

    2. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    3. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Engine and ECT / Data List / Exhaust Temperature B1S2, Exhaust Temperature B2S2, Exhaust Temperature B1S3 and Exhaust Temperature B2S3.

    5. Read the values.

Value of "Exhaust Temperature B1S2" is 400°C (752°F) or higher A
Value of "Exhaust Temperature B1S3" is 400°C (752°F) or higher
Value of "Exhaust Temperature B2S2" is 400°C (752°F) or higher
Value of "Exhaust Temperature B2S3" is 400°C (752°F) or higher
      Except above B

      Tech Tips

If the exhaust gas temperature sensor is normal, the exhaust gas temperature drops when the vehicle is left as is for 1 to 2 hours with the engine stopped. If the exhaust gas temperature does not drop, the exhaust gas temperature sensor may be malfunctioning.

  3. READ VALUE USING GTS (ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE)

    1. Allow the engine to soak for 1 to 2 hours.

      Tech Tips

      • It is not necessary to allow the engine to soak if the engine is cold.

      • The engine cools faster if the hood is opened.

    2. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    3. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Engine and ECT / Data List / Coolant temp.

    5. Read the value.

      OK
The difference between the displayed value and outside air temperature is below 5°C (9°F).

      Note

If the difference between "Coolant Temp" and the outside air temperature is 5°C (9°F) or higher, the heat from the engine affects the intake air temperature sensor, causing an incorrect value to be displayed. In this case, allow the engine to soak again.

  8. CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED

    1. Leave the vehicle as is for 1 to 2 hours with the engine stopped.

      Tech Tips

      • It is not necessary to allow the engine to soak if the engine is cold.

      • The engine cools faster if the hood is opened.

    2. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    3. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Engine and ECT / Data List / Exhaust Temperature B1S2, Exhaust Temperature B1S3, Exhaust Temperature B2S2, Exhaust Temperature B2S3 and Intake Air.
