PROCEDURE
INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE (w/ Steering Sensor)
Note
If the steering sensor is installed to a misaligned spiral cable, DTCs for an abnormal steering sensor value such as DTC C1290, C1439 are stored and it is impossible to repair them. If this happens, replace the spiral cable sub-assembly with a new one.
| *a | Check Window |
| *b | Matchmark |
|
U-Turn Point |
Check the check window shown in the illustration.
With the steering wheel straight ahead, align the matchmarks to check the U-turn point of the cable from the check window.
Note
When the conditions above cannot be checked via the check window with the front wheels facing straight ahead, there may be a malfunction in the spiral cable. In this case, replace the spiral cable sensor sub-assembly with a new one.
If the spiral cable is not centered, center it.
|
Interlock |
|
Counterclockwise |
While pushing on the interlock indicated in the illustration, rotate the spiral cable counterclockwise slowly by hand until it stops.
Note
When rotating the spiral cable, make sure to push on the interlock indicated in the illustration to release the interlock mechanism.
Do not turn the spiral cable using the airbag wire harness.
|
Interlock |
|
Clockwise |
While pushing on the interlock indicated in the illustration, rotate the spiral cable 2.5 times clockwise from the lock position.
Tech Tips
The spiral cable will rotate approximately 2.5 turns to both the left and right from the center.

|
In this case, replace the spiral cable sub-assembly with a new one.
| *a | Pin |
| *b | Guide |
| *c | Lock Pin |
Align the 2 pins and 2 guides of the spiral cable with the locations shown in the illustration and attach the 6 claws to install the spiral cable to the steering sensor.
Note
Do not remove the lock pin before the spiral cable is installed to the steering sensor.
Remove the lock pin from the steering sensor.
INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
Note
Do not replace the spiral cable sub-assembly with the battery connected and the ignition switch ON.
Do not rotate the spiral cable sub-assembly with the battery connected and the ignition switch ON.
Check that the ignition switch is off.
Check that the cable is disconnected from the negative (-) battery terminal.
CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
If the airbag deploys for any reason, it may cause a serious accident.
Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
Attach the claw to install the spiral cable sub-assembly.
Note
When replacing the spiral cable sub-assembly with a new one, remove the lock pin before installing the steering wheel assembly.
Connect each connector.
Note
When connecting any airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.
| *a | Slider |
| *b | Lock Position |
Connect the airbag connector and check that the slider is in the lock position.
Tech Tips
If the slider is not in the lock position, the airbag connector is not completely connected. Disconnect the airbag connector, check the airbag connector and spiral cable sub-assembly terminals and connector housings for deformation or foreign matter, and then reconnect the airbag connector.
INSTALL UPPER STEERING COLUMN COVER
INSTALL LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVER
PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
Note
Do not adjust the spiral cable sub-assembly with the battery connected and the ignition switch ON.

|
U-Turn Point |
Check the check window shown in the illustration.
With the steering wheel straight ahead, align the matchmarks to check the U-turn point of the cable from the check window.
Note
When the conditions above cannot be checked via the check window with the front wheels facing straight ahead, there may be a malfunction in the spiral cable sub-assembly. In this case, replace the spiral with cable sensor sub-assembly with a new one.
If the spiral cable sub-assembly is not centered, center it.
|
Interlock |
|
Counterclockwise |
While pushing on the interlock indicated in the illustration, rotate the spiral cable sub-assembly counterclockwise slowly by hand until it stops.
Note
When rotating the spiral cable sub-assembly, make sure to push on the interlock indicated in the illustration to release the interlock mechanism.
Do not turn the spiral cable sub-assembly using the airbag wire harness.

Check the check window shown in the illustration.
With the steering wheel straight ahead, align the matchmarks to check the U-turn point of the cable from the check window.
If the cable cannot be centered, it is possible that the spiral cable sub-assembly is broken. Replace the spiral cable sub-assembly with a new one.
INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
Note
When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected.
