BRAKE FLUID (w/ VSC) BLEEDING

Note

  • As brake fluid may overflow, do not leave the brake fluid can in the reservoir filler opening when adding brake fluid.

  • Do not allow brake fluid to come into contact with any painted surface. If contact occurs, wash off the fluid immediately.

  • Perform brake fluid replacement while adding fluid to maintain the fluid level between the MIN and MAX lines of the reservoir.

  1. ADD BRAKE FLUID

    Brake fluid
    SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 or equivalent

    Note

    Do not remove the filter from the brake master cylinder reservoir and be sure to fill with new brake fluid to avoid any potential contamination of the brake system. Contamination, for example by dirt particles or mineral oil, could lead to functional brake problems.

  2. BLEED BRAKE LINE

    1. Remove the brake master cylinder reservoir filler cap assembly.

    2. Add brake fluid until the fluid level is between the MIN and MAX lines of the reservoir.

    3. Loosen the bleeder plug of the front disc brake cylinder RH.

    4. Repeatedly depress the brake pedal and bleed the air from the bleeder plug of the front disc brake cylinder RH.

      Note

      Add fluid as necessary so that the fluid in the reservoir does not decrease below the MIN level.

    5. After air is completely bled out, tighten the bleeder plug while depressing the brake pedal.

      Torque:
      11 N*m  { 110 kgf*cm, 8 ft.*lbf }
    6. Bleed the air from the bleeder plug of the front disc brake cylinder LH using the same procedure as for the RH side.

    7. Loosen the bleeder plug of the rear wheel brake cylinder RH.

    8. Repeatedly depress the brake pedal and bleed the air from the bleeder plug of the rear wheel brake cylinder RH.

      Note

      Add fluid as necessary so that the fluid in the reservoir does not decrease below the MIN level.

    9. After air is completely bled out, tighten the bleeder plug while depressing the brake pedal.

      Torque:
      11 N*m  { 112 kgf*cm, 8 ft.*lbf }
    10. Bleed the air from the bleeder plug of the rear wheel brake cylinder LH using the same procedure as for the RH side.

    11. Check for brake fluid leaks.

    12. Check the brake fluid level and add fluid if necessary.

  3. BLEED BRAKE SYSTEM

    CAUTION:

    If air is bled without using the GTS, damage or accidents may result. Therefore, always use the GTS when bleeding air.

    1. Remove the brake master cylinder reservoir filler cap assembly.

    2. Add brake fluid until the fluid level is between the MIN and MAX lines of the reservoir.

      Note

      Do not remove the filter from the brake master cylinder reservoir and be sure to fill with new brake fluid to avoid any potential contamination of the brake system. Contamination, for example by dirt particles or mineral oil, could lead to functional brake problems.

      Using a union nut wrench, disconnect the 2 brake tubes from the master cylinder.

      Note

      • Do not kink or damage the brake lines.

      • Do not allow any foreign matter such as dirt or dust to enter the brake lines from the connecting parts.

    4. Slowly depress and hold the brake pedal.

    5. A003AVB

      Block the tube holes with your fingers, and then release the brake pedal.

    6. Remove your fingers, slowly depress and hold the brake pedal, block the tube holes with your fingers again, and then release the brake pedal. Repeat this step 3 or 4 times.

      *a Torque Wrench Fulcrum Length

      Using a union nut wrench, connect the 2 brake tubes to the brake master cylinder assembly.

      Torque:
      Specified tightening torque
      25 N*m  { 255 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf }

      Tech Tips

      • Calculate the torque wrench reading when changing the fulcrum length of the torque wrench Click here.

      • When using a union nut wrench (fulcrum length of 20 mm (0.8661 in.)) + torque wrench (fulcrum length of 180 mm (7.0866 in.)): 23 N*m (229 kgf*cm, 17 ft.*lbf)

    8. Loosen the bleeder plug of the front brake cylinder RH.

    9. Repeatedly depress the brake pedal and bleed the air from the bleeder plug of the front brake cylinder RH.

      Note

      Add fluid as necessary so that the fluid in the reservoir does not decrease below the MIN level.

    10. After air is completely bled out, tighten the bleeder plug while depressing the brake pedal.

      Torque:
      11 N*m  { 110 kgf*cm, 8 ft.*lbf }
