ECD SYSTEM (w/o DPF), Diagnostic DTC:P0500

DTC Code DTC Name
P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor "A"

DESCRIPTION

Vehicles, which are equipped with manual transmission, detect the vehicle speed using the speedometer sensor. The speedometer sensor transmits a 4-pulse signal for every revolution of the rotor shaft, which is rotated by the transmission output shaft via the driven gear. The 4-pulse signal is converted into a more precise rectangular waveform by the waveform shaping circuit inside the combination meter. The signal is then transmitted to the ECM. The ECM determines the vehicle speed based on the frequency of the pulse signal.

After replacing the ECM, the new ECM needs registration Click here and initialization Click here.

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using an intelligent tester. Freeze frame data record the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data, from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK OPERATION OF SPEEDOMETER

    1. Drive the vehicle.

    2. Check the speedometer reading in the combination meter.

      Tech Tips

If the vehicle speed sensor signal is inaccurate, the speedometer will show abnormal readings.

      OK
      Speedometer operates normally.

    OK
  2. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (VEHICLE SPEED)

    1. Connect an intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Start the engine and turn the tester ON.

    3. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Vehicle Speed.

    4. Check the vehicle speed at an engine speed of 2,000 rpm or more while the vehicle is running.

      OK
Same value as actual vehicle speed.

    OK
    NG
  3. CHECK ECM TERMINAL VOLTAGE (SPD TERMINAL)

    1. A01BBN1E12

Check the waveform of the ECM connectors using an oscilloscope.

      1. Jack up the vehicle.

      2. Move the shift lever to the N position.

      3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

      4. Check the waveform between the specified terminals of the ECM connectors as the rear wheels are turned slowly.
