ECD SYSTEM(w/o DPF), Diagnostic DTC:P0116

DTC Code DTC Name
P0116 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range / Performance Problem

DESCRIPTION

A thermistor is built into the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor and it changes its resistance value according to the engine coolant temperature.

The structure of the sensor and connection to the ECM are the same as the intake air temperature sensor.

P0116
DTC Detection Drive Pattern DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area
DTC P0116 is stored when the vehicle idles for more than 5 minutes after driving in 3rd gear at a vehicle speed of 60 km/h (37 mph) or more for more than 10 minutes.

When engine coolant temperature is less than 35°C (95°F) at engine start, engine coolant temperature change in 60 seconds is less than 1°C (1.8°F) on the engine coolant temperature sensor while the engine is at high load.

(2 trip detection logic)

  • Engine coolant temperature sensor

  • ECM

When engine coolant temperature is more than 98°C (208°F) at engine start, engine coolant temperature sensor shows a change of less than 3°C (5.4°F) in 240 seconds while the engine load is equal to that when the engine is idling

(3 trip detection logic and the MIL is not illuminated)

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Note

When replacing the ECM, the ECM needs Registration and Initialization Click here.

Tech Tips

  • When the ECM must be replaced, before replacing the ECM, perform the "Learning Values Save" function using the intelligent tester. Then after installing the new ECM, perform all of the initialization/registrations for the "Learning Values Write" function by following the instructions shown on the tester display.

  • Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0116)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

    4. Read the DTCs.

  3. CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

    3. Clear the DTCs Click here.

    4. Turn the ignition switch off.

    5. After starting the engine, drive the vehicle with 3rd gear at a vehicle speed of 60 km/h (37 mph) or more for more than 10 minutes.

      CAUTION:

When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

    6. Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes or more.

    7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC / Pending.

    8. Confirm that the pending DTC is not output again.
