FUEL SYSTEM ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK FOR FUEL PUMP OPERATION AND FUEL LEAKS

    1. Check fuel pump operation.

      1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

      2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.

        Note

        Do not start the engine.

      3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Fuel Pump / Speed.

      4. Check for pressure in the fuel tube sub-assembly from the fuel pipe. Check that sounds of fuel flowing from the fuel tank can be heard. If no sounds can be heard, check the integration relay, fuel pump, ECM and wiring connectors.

    2. Inspect for fuel leaks.

      1. Check that there are no fuel leaks from the fuel system after doing any maintenance or repairs. If there is a fuel leak, repair or replace parts as necessary.

    3. Turn the engine switch off.

    4. Disconnect the GTS from the DLC3.

  2. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE

    1. Discharge the fuel system pressure Click here.

    2. Using a voltmeter, measure the battery voltage.

      Standard voltage
      11 to 14 V
    3. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

      CAUTION:

When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Click here.

    4. Remove the No. 1 fuel pipe clamp.

    5. Disconnect the fuel pipe from the fuel tube sub-assembly Click here.

Install SST (EFI fuel pressure gauge) as shown in the illustration.

      SST

      09268-45100   ( 09268-41250, 09268-41260, 09268-41270, 95336-08070 )
    7. Wipe up any spilled fuel.

    8. Connect the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal.

      Note

When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Click here.

    9. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Fuel Pump / Speed.

    11. Measure the fuel pressure.

      Standard fuel pressure
      380 to 420 kPa (3.9 to 4.3 kgf/cm2, 55 to 61 psi)

      • If the fuel pressure is greater than the standard, replace the fuel pressure regulator.

      • If the fuel pressure is less than the standard, check the fuel hoses and connections, fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator.

    12. Disconnect the GTS from the DLC3.

    13. Start the engine.

    14. Measure the fuel pressure at idle.

      Standard fuel pressure
      380 to 420 kPa (3.9 to 4.3 kgf/cm2, 55 to 61 psi)
    15. Stop the engine.

    16. Check that the fuel pressure remains as specified for 5 minutes after the engine stops.

      Standard fuel pressure
      147 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm2, 21 psi) or more

If the fuel pressure is not as specified, check the fuel pump, pressure regulator and/or fuel injectors.

    17. After checking the fuel pressure, disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal and carefully remove SST to prevent fuel from spraying.

      Note

When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Click here.

    18. Reconnect the fuel pipe to the fuel tube sub-assembly.

    19. Install the No. 1 fuel pipe clamp to the fuel tube connector.

    20. Inspect for fuel leaks (Step 1).
