CYLINDER HEAD GASKET REMOVAL

PROCEDURE

  1. INSTALL ENGINE TO ENGINE STAND

  2. REMOVE ENGINE HANGER

  3. REMOVE WATER BY-PASS HOSE ASSEMBLY

  4. REMOVE OIL LEVEL GAUGE GUIDE OIL HOSE

  5. REMOVE ENGINE OIL LEVEL DIPSTICK

  6. REMOVE ENGINE OIL LEVEL DIPSTICK GUIDE

  7. REMOVE MANIFOLD STAY

  8. REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD (TWC: Catalyst)

  9. REMOVE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (for Exhaust Side)

  10. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side)

  11. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side)

  12. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR

  13. REMOVE NO. 1 IGNITION COIL

  14. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  15. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER GASKET

  16. REMOVE WATER BY-PASS PIPE

  17. SET NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC/EXHAUST

  18. REMOVE OIL PAN SUB-ASSEMBLY

      Remove the 13 bolts and 2 nuts.

      Oil Pan Seal Cutter

      Insert the blade of an oil pan seal cutter between the oil pan sub-assembly and cylinder block sub-assembly. Cut through the applied sealer and remove the oil pan sub-assembly.

      Note:

      Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the oil pan sub-assembly.

  19. REMOVE ENGINE WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY

  20. REMOVE OIL FILTER BRACKET

  21. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY

  22. REMOVE TIMING CHAIN COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

  23. REMOVE TIMING CHAIN COVER OIL SEAL

  24. REMOVE NO. 1 CHAIN TENSIONER ASSEMBLY

  25. REMOVE TIMING CHAIN TENSION ARM

  26. REMOVE CHAIN SUB-ASSEMBLY

  27. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT TIMING SPROCKET

  28. REMOVE TIMING CHAIN GUIDE

  29. REMOVE BRACKET

  30. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING SPROCKET ASSEMBLY

  31. REMOVE CAMSHAFT BEARING CAP

  32. REMOVE OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER

  33. REMOVE NO. 2 CAMSHAFT

  34. REMOVE CAMSHAFT

  35. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. A278664N01

      Using an 8 mm bi-hexagon wrench, uniformly loosen and remove the 8 cylinder head set bolts and 8 plate washers in several steps in the order shown in the illustration.

      Note:
      • Cylinder head sub-assembly warpage or cracking may result from removing the bolts in the wrong order.

      • Do not drop the washers into the cylinder head sub-assembly.

    2. Remove the cylinder head sub-assembly from the cylinder block sub-assembly.

  36. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD GASKET

    1. Remove the cylinder head gasket from the cylinder block sub-assembly.
