PROCEDURE
INSTALL ENGINE TO ENGINE STAND
REMOVE ENGINE HANGER
REMOVE WATER BY-PASS HOSE ASSEMBLY
REMOVE OIL LEVEL GAUGE GUIDE OIL HOSE
REMOVE ENGINE OIL LEVEL DIPSTICK
REMOVE ENGINE OIL LEVEL DIPSTICK GUIDE
REMOVE MANIFOLD STAY
REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD (TWC: Catalyst)
REMOVE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (for Exhaust Side)
REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side)
REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side)
REMOVE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
REMOVE NO. 1 IGNITION COIL
REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER GASKET
REMOVE WATER BY-PASS PIPE
SET NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC/EXHAUST
REMOVE OIL PAN SUB-ASSEMBLY

Remove the 13 bolts and 2 nuts.

Oil Pan Seal Cutter
Insert the blade of an oil pan seal cutter between the oil pan sub-assembly and cylinder block sub-assembly. Cut through the applied sealer and remove the oil pan sub-assembly.
Note:Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the oil pan sub-assembly.

REMOVE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY
REMOVE TIMING CHAIN COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
REMOVE TIMING CHAIN COVER OIL SEAL
REMOVE NO. 1 CHAIN TENSIONER ASSEMBLY
REMOVE TIMING CHAIN TENSION ARM
REMOVE CHAIN SUB-ASSEMBLY
REMOVE CRANKSHAFT TIMING SPROCKET
REMOVE TIMING CHAIN GUIDE
REMOVE BRACKET
REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING SPROCKET ASSEMBLY
REMOVE CAMSHAFT BEARING CAP
REMOVE OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
REMOVE NO. 2 CAMSHAFT
REMOVE CAMSHAFT
REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD SUB-ASSEMBLY

Using an 8 mm bi-hexagon wrench, uniformly loosen and remove the 8 cylinder head set bolts and 8 plate washers in several steps in the order shown in the illustration.
Note:Cylinder head sub-assembly warpage or cracking may result from removing the bolts in the wrong order.
Do not drop the washers into the cylinder head sub-assembly.
Remove the cylinder head sub-assembly from the cylinder block sub-assembly.

REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD GASKET
Remove the cylinder head gasket from the cylinder block sub-assembly.
