ECD SYSTEM(for Swirl Control Valve), Diagnostic DTC:P0016
| DTC Code | DTC Name |
|---|---|
| P0016 | Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor A |
DESCRIPTION
The ECM uses 2 sensors to detect the engine speed and the position of the crankshaft and camshaft. The crankshaft position sensor detects the engine speed and top dead center position of the crankshaft. The camshaft position sensor determines when the cylinder is at the top dead center of the compression or exhaust stroke.
The exhaust gas value worsens due to an angular error between the crankshaft and camshaft. The ECM stores DTC P0016 if the angular error between the crankshaft and camshaft exceeds the threshold.

Refer to DTC P0335 (Click here).
CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT
When replacing the ECM, the ECM needs Registration and Initialization (Click here).
When the ECM must be replaced, before replacing the ECM, perform the "Learning Values Save" function using the GTS. Then after installing the new ECM, perform all of the initialization/registrations for the "Learning Values Write" function by following the instructions shown on the GTS display.
Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
INSPECT CAMSHAFT ASSEMBLY AND CAMSHAFT TIMING SPROCKET INSTALLATION CONDITION
-
Remove the head cover so that the camshaft timing sprocket is visible.
Check the camshaft and camshaft timing sprocket installation condition.
OK
Camshaft and camshaft timing sprocket securely installed without looseness.
Tip:The holes for the bolts which connect the camshaft timing sprocket to the camshaft are long. If there is looseness, the parts can slide and become misaligned.
CHECK CAMSHAFT ASSEMBLY AND CAMSHAFT TIMING SPROCKET INSTALLATION CONDITIONClick here
-
CHECK SENSOR INSTALLATION (CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR)
Check the camshaft position sensor installation.
OK
Sensor is installed correctly.
SECURELY REINSTALL SENSORClick here
CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE OR JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN)
Remove the head cover so that the camshaft timing sprocket is visible.
Rotate the crankshaft, and then using SST, secure the crankshaft at compression top dead center (Click here).
Check the camshaft alignment marks (Click here).
OK
The valve timing is correctly aligned.

CHECK CAMSHAFT ASSEMBLY AND CAMSHAFT TIMING SPROCKET INSTALLATION CONDITION
Check the camshaft and camshaft timing sprocket installation condition and perform reinstallation if necessary.
Tip:The camshaft and camshaft timing sprocket installation condition can be checked using SST (Click here).

SECURELY REINSTALL SENSOR
Securely reinstall sensor (Click here).
CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIREDClick here
REPAIR OR REPLACE ENGINE MECHANICAL SYSTEM
Repair or replace for mechanical malfunctions that affect the valve timing, such as a jumped tooth or stretching of the timing chain. (Click here).
CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.
Clear the DTCs (Click here).
Turn the ignition switch off and wait for 60 seconds or more [A].
Perform road test [B].
Repeat [A] and [B] for the number of trips detected.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
Confirm that the DTC is not output again.
