ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (w/ Rear Differential Lock) OPERATION CHECK

  1. CHECK ABS WARNING LIGHT

    1. When the ignition switch is turned ON, check that the ABS warning light illuminates and then turns off in approximately 3 seconds.

      Tech Tips

Troubleshoot the ABS warning light circuit if the warning light remains ON or has other malfunctions.

  2. CHECK SENSOR SIGNAL BY TEST MODE (When not using intelligent tester:)

    1. A01DYNQE01

      Procedures for test mode:

      1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

      2. Using SST, connect terminals 12 (TS) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.

        SST
        09843-18040
      3. Start the engine.

      4. A01DY1FE01

Check that the ABS warning light blinks as shown in the illustration.

        Tech Tips

If the ABS warning light does not blink, check the ABS warning light circuit.

    2. 4WD, Pre-runner:

      Check the deceleration sensor.

      1. Keep the vehicle stationary on a level surface for 1 second or more.

    3. A01E0I8E01

      4WD:

      Check the H2 (2WD) to H4 or L4 (4WD) shift operation.

      1. Start the engine.

      2. Shift the transfer shift lever from the H2 position to the H4 or L4 position.

      3. Check that the 4WD indicator light illuminates.

      4. Shift the transfer shift lever from the H4 or L4 position to the H2 position.

      5. Check that the 4WD indicator light turns off.

        Tech Tips

        • If the indicator light does not turn off when shifting the transfer into the H2 position, drive the vehicle straight ahead while accelerating or decelerating, or drive the vehicle in reverse.

        • If a shift is left uncompleted for 30 minutes, the 4WD indicator light will begin flashing.

    4. Check the speed sensor.

      1. Drive the vehicle straight forward at the following speeds. Then check that the ABS warning light is as follows.

Vehicle Speed Check ABS Warning Light
        3 to 5 km/h (2 to 3 mph) Response of sensors Blinking
45 km/h (28 mph) or higher Deviations of sensor signal Turns off

        Tech Tips

The sensor signal check may not be completed if the vehicle's wheels slip or the steering wheel is turned during this check.

      2. Stop the vehicle.

    5. A01DYNQE02

      Read the DTCs.

      1. Using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.

        SST
        09843-18040
      2. Read the number of blinks of the ABS warning light.

        Tech Tips

        • As an example, the blinking patterns for DTCs 72 and 76 are shown below.

        • The conditions are explained in the Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart.

        • For the normal code, the light cycles between ON and OFF at intervals of 0.25 seconds.

        • If more than 1 DTC is detected at the same time, the codes will be displayed in numerical order.

    6. After the check, disconnect SST from terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.

  3. CHECK SENSOR SIGNAL BY TEST MODE (When using intelligent tester:)

    1. A01E2N9E01

      Procedures for test mode:

      1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

      2. Check that the shift lever is on P.

      3. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

      4. Start the engine.

      5. Select the Test Mode using the intelligent tester.

        Tech Tips

Refer to the intelligent tester operator's manual for further details.

      6. A01DY1FE01

Check that the ABS warning light blinks.

        Tech Tips

If the ABS warning light does not blink, check the ABS warning light circuit.

      7. Start the engine.

    2. 4WD, Pre-runner:

        Tech Tips
