Tech Tips


  • Use the same procedure for the RH and LH sides.

  • The procedure listed below is for the LH side.

PROCEDURE


  1. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT DUST COVER LH

    1. Using SST and a press, install a new rear drive shaft dust cover LH.

      SST

      Note


      • The rear drive shaft dust cover LH should be installed completely.

      • Be careful not to damage the rear drive shaft dust cover LH.

      • Install the rear drive shaft dust cover LH in the correct direction.

  2. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT LH

    *a Protective Tape

    1. Wrap the splines of the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly with protective tape to prevent the boot from being damaged.

      *1 Rear Drive Shaft Outboard Joint Shaft Assembly
      *2 Rear No. 2 Drive Shaft Outboard Joint Boot Clamp LH
      *3 Rear Drive Shaft Outboard Joint Boot LH
      *4 Rear Drive Shaft Outboard Joint Boot Clamp LH
      B008MD9 Outboard joint side
      B008LL0 Inboard joint side

      Install new parts to the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly in the following order:


      1. Rear No. 2 drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH

      2. Rear drive shaft outboard joint boot LH

      3. Rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH

    3. Pack the joint portion of the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly and outboard joint boot with grease.

      Standard Grease Capacity
      37 to 47 g (1.31 to 1.65 oz.)
    4. Install the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot to the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly groove.

      Note


      • Do not allow grease to adhere to the boot clamp track of the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot LH.

      • Keep the inside of the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot LH free of foreign matter.

  3. INSTALL REAR NO. 2 DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP LH

    CAUTION:


    • A001VDN

      When installing the rear No. 2 drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH, do not perform the work without wearing protective gloves.

    • If work is performed without using protective gloves, injuries may occur.


    1. A001TVY

      Using a screwdriver, install the rear No. 2 drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH as shown in the illustration.

      Note

      Be careful not to damage the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot LH.

  4. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP LH


    1. Install the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH onto the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot LH.

      *a Turn
      *b Hold

      Place SST onto the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH.

    3. Tighten SST so that the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH is pinched.

      Note


      • Do not overtighten SST.

      • Be careful not to damage the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot LH.

    4. A001VCTN01

      Using SST, measure the clearance of the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH.

      Clearance
      1.2 mm (0.0472 in.) or less

      Note

      If the measured value exceeds the specified value, retighten the rear drive shaft outboard joint boot clamp LH.

  5. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT ASSEMBLY LH


    1. Wrap the spline of the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly with protective tape to prevent the boot from being damaged.

      *2 Rear Drive Shaft Inboard Joint Boot LH
      *3 Rear No. 2 Drive Shaft Inboard Joint Boot Clamp LH
      *a Protective Tape

      B008LL0 Inboard joint side

      Install new parts to the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly in the following order:


      1. Rear drive shaft inboard joint boot clamp LH

      2. Rear drive shaft inboard joint boot LH

      3. Rear No. 2 drive shaft inboard joint boot clamp LH

    3. Secure the drive shaft in a vise between aluminum plates.

      Note

      Do not overtighten the vise.

    4. Remove the protective tape.

      *a Matchmark

      Align the matchmarks and install the tripod joint to the rear drive outboard joint shaft assembly.

      Note

      Face the serrated side of the tripod joint outward and install it to the outboard joint end.

    6. Using a brass bar and a hammer, install the tripod joint to the rear drive outboard joint shaft assembly.

      Note


      • Do not tap the rollers.

      • Keep the tripod joint free of foreign matter.

      • Make sure to install the tripod joint in the correct direction.

    7. A001WB4

      Using a snap ring expander, install a new rear drive shaft snap ring LH to the rear drive outboard joint shaft assembly.

    8. Pack the rear drive inboard joint assembly and rear axle inboard boot LH with grease.

      Standard grease capacity
      77 to 87 g (2.72 to 3.06 oz.)

      *a Matchmark

      Align the matchmarks and install the rear drive shaft inboard joint assembly LH to the rear drive shaft outboard joint shaft assembly.

  6. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT LH


    1. Install the rear drive shaft inboard joint boot LH to the rear drive shaft inboard joint assembly LH.

    2. A001VY5N10

      Check whether the drive shaft dimensions are within the following specifications.

      Tech Tips

      The following table shows the dimension (A) of the drive shaft.

  7. INSTALL REAR NO. 2 DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP LH


    1. A001WYG

      Using needle-nose pliers, install the rear No. 2 drive shaft inboard joint boot clamp LH as shown in the illustration.

      Note

      Be careful not to damage the rear drive shaft inboard joint boot LH.

  8. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT INBOARD JOINT BOOT CLAMP LH


    1. Perform the same procedure as for the rear No. 2 drive shaft inboard joint boot clamp LH.

  9. INSPECT REAR DRIVE SHAFT
