| DTC Code | DTC Name |
|---|---|
| P2111/41 | Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Open |
| P2112/41 | Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Closed |
DESCRIPTION
The throttle actuator is operated by the ECM and it opens and closes the throttle valve using gears. The opening angle of the throttle valve is detected by the throttle position sensor which is mounted on the throttle body. The sensor provides feedback to the ECM for controlling the throttle actuator, which adjusts the throttle valve opening in response to the driving conditions.
If this malfunction is detected, the ECM shuts down the power for the throttle actuator, and the throttle valve is locked at a certain opening angle by the return spring. Also, all electronically controlled throttle operations are canceled until the system returns to normal and the ignition switch is turned OFF.
Tech Tips
The Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) does not use a throttle cable.
| DTC No. | DTC Detection Condition | Suspected Area |
|---|---|---|
| P2111/41 | Throttle actuator locked while close command is being transmitted from ECM (1 trip detection logic) |
|
| P2112/41 | Throttle actuator locked while open command is being transmitted from ECM (1 trip detection logic) |
|
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The ECM concludes that there is a malfunction of the ETCS when the throttle valve remains at a fixed angle despite high drive current from the ECM. The ECM will illuminate the MIL and set a DTC.
To activate the monitor: 1) start the engine, 2) fully depress and release the accelerator pedal quickly to fully open and fully close the throttle valve, respectively.
FAIL-SAFE
If the ETCS is malfunctioning, the ECM cuts off the current to the throttle actuator. The throttle control valve returns to a predetermined throttle position (approximately 6.5°) by the force of the return spring.
Then, required engine power is calculated using the ignition timing and accelerator pedal position. The engine is controlled by intermittent fuel-cut.
If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and slowly, the vehicle can be driven at minimum speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed quickly, the vehicle may speed up and slow down erratically.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
Tech Tips
Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
CHECK OTHER DTC OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P2111/41, P2112/41)
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch ON and turn the intelligent tester ON.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
Read DTCs.

Tech Tips
If any other DTCs besides P2111/41 or P2112/41 are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.
