MULTI-MODE MANUAL TRANSAXLE SYSTEM DETAILS SHIFT LOCK MECHANISM
FUNCTION
The shift lock mechanism activates when the ignition switch is turned from ON to off, and locks the shift lock control unit assembly in the position (R, N, E and M) in which the ignition switch has been turned off. Thus, it disables the operation of the shift lock control unit assembly with the ignition switch off (when the shift and select actuator is inactive). As a result, it prevents the shift position selected at the shift lock control unit assembly and the actual shift position in the transaxle from being mismatched, thus preventing unintended operation of the shift lock control unit assembly.
When the brake pedal is not depressed for 2 seconds or more while the following 3 conditions are satisfied, the shift lock mechanism activates to lock the shift lock control unit assembly in the neutral position:
The shift lock control unit assembly is in the neutral position
The vehicle speed is approximately 9 km/h (6 mph) or less
The engine is running
Thus, it prevents the unintended operation of the shift lock control unit assembly, which prevents the vehicle from moving suddenly.
The shift lock mechanism deactivates when the ignition switch is turned from off to ON and the brake pedal is depressed for 2 seconds or more, thus allowing the driver to operate the shift lock control unit assembly.
Unlike an automatic transmission, the shift lock control unit assembly is not connected to the multi-mode manual transaxle by a cable. Instead, a shift-by-wire system, which electrically operates gears, is adopted. If the shift lock is manually unlocked using the shift release button and the shift position is moved, the shift lever position and actual gear position will no longer match. To avoid this, a service hole is not provided to prevent operation by users. If it is necessary to operate the shift lock release button for service intentions, remove the upper console panel sub-assembly to access the shift lock release button.
