ECD SYSTEM, Diagnostic DTC:P0116

DTC Code DTC Name
P0116 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range / Performance Problem

DESCRIPTION

A thermistor, whose resistance value varies according to the engine coolant temperature, is built into the engine coolant temperature sensor.

The structure of the sensor and connection to the ECM is the same as that of the intake air temperature sensor.

Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range / Performance Problem

Either of the following conditions is met (2 trip detection logic):

  • When engine is started cold and warmed up, the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change.

  • After the warmed up engine is stopped and the next cold engine start is performed, the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change.

  • Thermostat

  • Engine coolant temperature sensor

Tip:

If DTC P0116 is stored, the following symptoms may appear:

  • Misfire

  • Combustion noise

  • Black smoke

  • White smoke

  • Lack of power

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

DTC No.

DTC Detection Drive Pattern

P0116

With the engine coolant temperature below 60°C (140°F), start the engine and idle it for 5 minutes. Then drive the vehicle at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for a total of 5 minutes or more and check that the engine coolant temperature changes by 1°C (1.8°F) or higher.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

Engine coolant temperature sensor cold start monitor

When a cold engine start is performed and then the engine is warmed up, if the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change, it is determined that a malfunction has occurred. If this is detected in 2 consecutive driving cycles, the MIL is illuminated and a DTC is stored.

Engine coolant temperature sensor soak monitor

If the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change after the warmed up engine is stopped and then the next cold engine start is performed, it is determined that a malfunction has occurred. If this is detected in 2 consecutive driving cycles, the MIL is illuminated and a DTC is stored.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Tip:

Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0116)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    4. Read the DTCs.
