OUTLINE
The Electric Power Steering (EPS) system uses a power steering motor and a reduction mechanism that are built into the steering gear housing to generate assist torque, in order to assist the driver's steering effort.
The EPS system actuates the power steering motor only during steering when torque assist is required. As a result, the EPS system does not consume any energy during straight line driving, thus achieving improved fuel economy.
The EPS system performs control in cooperation with the brake control system. The power steering ECU controls the assist torque for the power steering motor based on the assist torque request sent from the skid control ECU (brake actuator assembly).
