LUBRICATION SYSTEM ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

  1. INSPECT ENGINE OIL LEVEL

    1. Warm up and stop the engine, and then wait for 5 minutes. The oil level should be between the dipstick's low level mark and full level mark.

If low, check for leakage and add oil up to the full level mark.

      Note

Do not add engine oil to above the full level mark.

      Tech Tips

A certain amount of engine oil will be consumed while driving. In the following situations, engine oil consumption may increase, and engine oil may need to be refilled in between oil maintenance intervals.

      • When the engine is new, for example directly after purchasing the vehicle or after replacing the engine.

      • If low quality engine oil or oil of an inappropriate viscosity is used.

      • When driving at high engine speed or with a heavy load, when towing, or when driving while accelerating or decelerating frequently.

      • When leaving the engine idling for a long time, or when driving frequently through heavy traffic.

When judging the amount of oil consumption, keep in mind that the oil may have become diluted, making it difficult to judge the true level accurately.

  2. INSPECT ENGINE OIL QUALITY

    1. Check the oil for deterioration, water contamination, discoloration or thinning.

If the quality is visibly poor, replace the oil and oil filter element.

  3. INSPECT OIL PRESSURE

    CAUTION:

    • B006FZX

To prevent injury due to contact with an operating fan and generator V belt or cooling fan, keep your hands and clothing away from the fan and generator V belt and cooling fans when working in the engine compartment with the engine running or the engine switch on (IG).

    • B006A7T

To prevent burns, do not touch the engine, exhaust manifold or other high temperature components while the engine is hot.

    • B006CJ9

To prevent burns, do not remove the engine oil pressure switch assembly while the engine is hot.

    Note

Before and after measurement, clean equipment and hoses.

      *A for 2WD
      *B for AWD

      Install the oil pressure gauge.

    3. Warm up the engine.

      Tech Tips

After warming up the engine, the engine coolant temperature is 75 to 100°C (167 to 212°F).

    4. Inspect the oil pressure.

      Standard Oil Pressure
      Item Oil Pressure
      Idle

      30 kPa (0.3 kgf/cm2, 4 psi) or higher

      2500 rpm

      180 kPa (1.8 kgf/cm2, 26 psi) or higher

    5. Remove the oil pressure gauge.

    6. Install the engine oil pressure switch assembly.
