LUBRICATION SYSTEM ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL

    1. Warm up and stop the engine, then wait for 5 minutes.

    2. Check that the engine oil level is between the low level and full level marks on the engine oil level dipstick.

If the level is low, check for engine oil leaks and add engine oil to the full level mark.

      Note:

Do not add engine oil to above the full level mark.

      Tip:

A certain amount of engine oil will be consumed while driving. In the following situations, engine oil consumption may increase, and engine oil may need to be refilled in between oil maintenance intervals.

      • When the engine is new, for example directly after purchasing the vehicle or after replacing the engine.

      • If low quality engine oil or oil of an inappropriate viscosity is used.

      • When driving at high engine speeds or with a heavy load (when towing, etc.), or when accelerating or decelerating frequently while driving.

      • When idling for a long time, or when driving frequently through heavy traffic.

When judging the amount of oil consumption, keep in mind that the oil may have become diluted, making it difficult to judge the true level accurately.

  2. CHECK ENGINE OIL QUALITY

    1. Check the engine oil for deterioration, water intrusion, discoloration or thinning.

If the quality is visibly poor, replace the engine oil and oil filter sub-assembly.

  3. CHECK ENGINE OIL PRESSURE

    1. Remove the engine oil pressure switch assembly.

      CAUTION:

Make sure the engine is cold when removing the engine oil pressure switch assembly to prevent burns caused by hot engine oil.

      1503-AY

      1503-J

    5. Start the engine.

      Tip:

After starting the engine, the engine oil temperature is 80°C (176°F).

    6. Check the engine oil pressure.

      Standard Engine Oil Pressure

      Engine speed

      Minimum oil pressure

      750 rpm

      190 to 250 kPa (1.9 to 2.5 kgf/cm2, 27.6 to 36.3 psi)

      1000 rpm

      290 to 350 kPa (3.0 to 3.6 kgf/cm2, 42.1 to 50.8 psi)

      2000 rpm

      450 to 510 kPa (4.6 to 5.2 kgf/cm2, 65.3 to 74.0 psi)

      3000 rpm

      500 to 560 kPa (5.1 to 5.7 kgf/cm2, 72.5 to 81.2 psi)

      4000 rpm

      530 to 590 kPa (5.4 to 6.0 kgf/cm2, 76.9 to 85.6 psi)

      5000 rpm

      570 to 630 kPa (5.8 to 6.4 kgf/cm2, 82.7 to 91.4 psi)

      6000 rpm

      580 to 640 kPa (5.9 to 6.5 kgf/cm2, 84.1 to 92.8 psi)

If the result is not as specified, check the quality of the engine oil and check the oil paths for clogging. Repair or replace if necessary. If the engine oil pressure is still not as specified, check the oil pump.

    7. Remove SST C and SST D from SST B.
