WATER PUMP ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

  1. INSPECT FOR COOLANT LEAK

    Tip:
    • Before performing this inspection, check that there are no engine coolant leaks from any parts other than the engine water pump assembly. If there are leaks, inspect those areas.

    • Perform this inspection when the engine is cold.

    1. Visually inspect the engine compartment for the following conditions.

      1. There is a large amount of engine coolant in the engine compartment or on the underside of the hood near the V-ribbed belt.

      2. Engine coolant is dripping from around the engine water pump assembly.

      3. The engine coolant level in the radiator reserve tank assembly is below the low line and there are traces of leakage around the engine water pump assembly.

        Tip:
        • If any of the above conditions exist, replace the engine water pump assembly.

        • If none of the above conditions exist, perform the following inspection (inspection of the area around the engine water pump assembly).

    2. Inspect the area around the engine water pump assembly.

      Tip:

Check for deposits around the drain plug of the engine water pump assembly.

        Water Pump Pulley Hole

Rotate the crankshaft pulley and align the water pump pulley hole with the drain plug.

        Tip:
        • The drain plug is at the bottom of the engine water pump assembly.

        • Use a mirror to check that the water pump pulley hole and drain plug are aligned.

        Paper Towel

Wrap a thin paper towel around an L-shaped tool such as a hexagon wrench, and insert it into the water pump pulley hole.

        Tip:
        • Use a 3 mm (0.118 in.) hexagon wrench.

        • The diameter of the water pump pulley hole is 6 mm (0.236 in.).

        • The distance from the water pump pulley hole to the drain plug is 17 mm (0.669 in.).

        Hexagon Wrench

Move the hexagon wrench as shown in the illustration, and press the paper towel against the coolant (solid matter) adhered to the drain plug or the edge of the drain plug, and check the condition of the paper towel.

        Tip:
        • If the paper towel is wet, replace the engine water pump assembly.

        • If the paper towel is dry, clean the area around the engine water pump assembly.

  2. INSPECT ENGINE WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY

    1. Remove the V-ribbed belt.

Turn the pulley and check that the water pump bearing moves smoothly and quietly.

If necessary, replace the engine water pump assembly.

    3. Install the V-ribbed belt.
