BRAKE FLUID REPLACEMENT

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Note

  • Move the shift lever to P and apply the parking brake before replacing the brake fluid (for automatic transmission).

  • Add brake fluid to keep the level between the MIN and MAX lines of the reservoir while replacing the brake fluid.

  • If brake fluid leaks onto any painted surface, immediately wash it off.

Tech Tips

If any work is performed on the brake system or if air in the brake lines is suspected, bleed the brake system.

PROCEDURE

  1. FILL RESERVOIR WITH BRAKE FLUID

    1. Remove the brake master cylinder reservoir filler cap.

    2. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.

      Brake Fluid
      SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3

      Note

      Make sure that there is sufficient brake fluid in the reservoir.

  2. BLEED BRAKE LINE

    B008BAE

    Note

    • Bleed the brake line in the following order: Front RH → Front LH → Rear LH → Rear RH.

    • Add brake fluid to keep the level between the MIN and MAX lines of the reservoir while bleeding the brake lines.

    1. Connect a vinyl tube to the bleeder plug.

    2. Depress the brake pedal several times, and then loosen the bleeder plug with the pedal depressed.*1

    3. When fluid stops coming out, tighten the bleeder plug and release the brake pedal.*2

    4. Repeat steps *1 and *2 until all the air in the brake fluid is completely bled out and a new brake fluid comes out.

    5. Tighten the bleeder plug completely.

      Torque:
      for Floating Type Caliper
      8.0 N*m  { 82 kgf*cm, 6 ft.*lbf }
      for Opposed Type Caliper
      20 N*m  { 204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf }
    6. Repeat the above steps to replace the brake fluid of the brake lines for each wheel.

      Tech Tips

      For opopsed type caliper, perform this step starting from inside toward outside, and for front RH, front LH, rear LH, rear RH in this order.

  3. INSPECT FOR BRAKE FLUID LEAK

  4. INSPECT BRAKE FLUID LEVEL IN RESERVOIR
