SFI SYSTEM, Diagnostic DTC:P2111 and P2112

DTC Code DTC Name
P2111 Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Open
P2112 Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Closed

DESCRIPTION

The throttle actuator is operated by the ECM, and opens and closes the throttle valve using gears. The opening angle of the throttle valve is detected by the throttle position sensor, which is built into the throttle body assembly. The throttle position sensor provides feedback to the ECM in order to control the throttle actuator, and therefore the throttle valve, appropriately in response to driver inputs.

Tip:

This electronic throttle control system does not use a throttle cable.

DTC No.

DTC Detection Condition

Trouble Area

P2111

ECM signals throttle actuator to close, but the actuator is stuck (1 trip detection logic).

  • Throttle actuator

  • Throttle body assembly

  • Throttle valve

  • ECM

  • Wire harness or connector

P2112

ECM signals throttle actuator to open, but the actuator is stuck (1 trip detection logic).

  • Throttle actuator

  • Throttle body assembly

  • Throttle valve

  • ECM

  • Wire harness or connector

FAIL-SAFE

When either of these DTCs or other DTCs relating to electronic throttle control system malfunctions are stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ECM cuts the current to the throttle actuator, and the throttle valve is returned to a 5.5° opening angle by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing, in accordance with the accelerator pedal position, to allow the vehicle to continue at a minimal speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed gently, the vehicle can be driven slowly. Fail-safe mode continues until a pass condition is detected and the ignition switch is turned off.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Tip:

Read freeze frame data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P2111 OR P2112)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    5. Read DTCs.

P2111 or P2112 and other DTCs are output

    B

    Tip:

If any DTCs other than P2111 or P2112 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    GO TO DTC CHART

  2. INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY (VISUALLY CHECK THROTTLE VALVE)

    1. Check for contamination between the throttle valve and housing. If necessary, clean the throttle body assembly. Also, check that the throttle valve moves smoothly.

      OK

Throttle valve is not contaminated with foreign objects and moves smoothly.

      Tip:

Perform "Inspection After Repair" after cleaning the throttle body assembly (Click here).

  3. READ VALUE USING GTS (THROTTLE POSITION)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Clear the DTCs (Click here).

    5. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

    6. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Throttle Position No. 1, Throttle Position No. 2 and Throttle Position Command.

    8. Check the values displayed on the GTS while wiggling the ECM wire harness.

    9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    10. Check for DTCs.
