  • Open or short in engine oil temperature sensor circuit

  • Engine oil temperature sensor

  • ECM

Does not come on DTC stored

SAE Code:

P0198

Tech Tips

When this DTC is output, check the engine oil temperature in the Data List. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Engine Oil Temperature Sensor.

DTC No. Engine Oil Temperature Sensor Malfunction
P019515 -40°C (-40°F)
  • Short to +B in THEO circuit

  • Open in THEO circuit

  • Open in ETHE circuit

If the Data List values is normal it may be due to a temporary recovery from the malfunction condition. Check for intermittent problems.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The ECM monitors the engine oil temperature sensor and uses the sensor voltage to calculate the engine oil temperature. If the engine oil temperature sensor output voltage deviates from the normal operating range, the ECM determines that the engine oil temperature sensor circuit is malfunctioning and stores a DTC.

Example:

If the engine oil temperature sensor output voltage is higher than 4.93 V for 5 seconds or more, the ECM store this DTC.

MONITOR STRATEGY

Frequency of Operation Continuous

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

  1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

  2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).

  3. Turn the GTS on.

  4. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).

  5. Turn the engine switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

  6. Turn the engine switch on (IG).

  7. Turn the GTS on.

  8. Start the engine and wait for the time indicated below.

    • If the engine oil temperature sensor is higher than -10°C (14°F): 15 seconds or more.

    • If the engine oil temperature sensor is -10°C (14°F) or less: 13 minutes or more.

  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.

  10. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  11. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

  12. Input the DTC: P019515.

  13. Check the DTC judgment result.

    GTS Display Description
    NORMAL
    • DTC judgment completed

    • System normal

    ABNORMAL
    • DTC judgment completed

    • System abnormal

    INCOMPLETE
    • DTC judgment not completed

    • Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions

    Tech Tips

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

    • If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE, perform the Confirmation Driving Pattern and check the DTC judgment result again.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Tech Tips

Read Freeze Frame Data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as Freeze Frame Data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, Freeze Frame Data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
