EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

  1. INSPECT FUEL CUT OPERATION

    1. Start the engine.

    2. Warm up the engine.

    3. Increase the engine speed to at least 3000 rpm.

      Sound Scope

      Using a sound scope, check for injector operating sounds.

    5. When the accelerator pedal is released, check that injector operating sounds stop momentarily and then resume.

      If the result is not as specified, check the fuel injector assemblies, wire harness and ECM.

  2. VISUALLY CHECK HOSES, CONNECTIONS AND GASKETS

    1. Visually check that the hoses, connections and gaskets have no cracks, leaks or damage.

      Note:

      • Detachment or other problems with the engine oil level dipstick, filler cap, ventilation hose or other components may cause the engine to run improperly.

      • Air suction caused by disconnections, looseness or cracks in any part of the air induction system between the throttle body and cylinder head will cause engine failure or engine malfunctions.

      If any defects are found, replace parts as necessary.

  3. INSPECT EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Start the engine.

    3. Warm up the engine.

    4. Turn the GTS on.

      Slide the clip and disconnect the No. 1 fuel vapor feed hose from the purge valve (purge VSV).

    6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Activate the VSV for Evap Control.

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Active Test

      Activate the VSV for Evap Control

    7. Check that vacuum occurs at the purge valve (purge VSV) port.

    8. If vacuum does not occur, check the following items:

      • Purge valve (purge VSV)

      • Clogs in the No. 1 fuel vapor feed hose that connects the intake manifold and purge valve (purge VSV)

      • Voltage from the ECM PRG terminal

    9. Exit Active Test mode and connect the No. 1 fuel vapor feed hose and slide the clip to secure it.

    10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / EVAP Purge VSV.

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Data List

    11. Drive the vehicle.

    12. Confirm that the purge valve (purge VSV) opens.

      If the result is not as specified, replace the purge valve (purge VSV), wire harness or ECM.

  4. INSPECT EGR SYSTEM

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Start the engine.

    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active test / Control the EGR Step Position.

      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Active Test

    6. Check the engine speed when the EGR valve assembly is operated by the GTS.

    7. Perform the Active Test by referring to the table below.

      Tip:

      Test is possible with vehicle stopped and engine idling.

      Open the EGR valve assembly gradually

      (Increase number of steps)

      As the valve opens, engine changes from steady idling to rough idling

      Close the EGR valve assembly gradually

      (Decrease number of steps)

      As the valve closes, engine changes from rough idling to steady idling
