POWER BACK DOOR SYSTEM


  1. FUNCTION OF MAIN COMPONENTS

    Component Function
    Power Back Door Unit Assembly Power Back Door Motor Opens and closes the back door when actuated by the power back door ECU.
    Hall IC Detects the operation conditions of the back door and outputs a pulse signal to the power back door ECU.
    Power Back Door ECU (Multiplex Network Door ECU)
    • Controls the power back door system in accordance with signals received from the switches, sensors and ECUs.

    • Receives signals from the Hall IC to detect the back door condition and the opening and closing speed of the back door.

    • Informs the user of the operation condition of the power back door system by sounding the back door buzzer and outputs hazard warning light flash request signals to the combination meter*1.

    Back Door Lock with Closer Assembly Back Door Lock Motor Latches and unlatches the back door when actuated by the power back door ECU.
    Sector Switch Detects the initial position of the back door lock motor and outputs a signal to the power back door ECU.
    Pawl Switch Detects whether the ratchet condition is released or engaged and outputs a signal to the power back door ECU.
    Latch Switch Detects whether the back door is open or ajar (half-latch) and outputs a signal to the power back door ECU.
    Courtesy Switch Detects whether the back door is ajar (half-latch) or fully closed (full-latch) and outputs a signal to the power back door ECU.
    Back Door Control Switch
    • Outputs signals to the main body ECU.

    • When the back door is unlocked and closed, back door opening operations are performed by pressing and holding the back door control switch.

    • When the back door is open, back door closing operations are performed by pressing and holding the back door control switch.

    • During an opening or closing operation of the back door, pressing the back door control switch suspends the operation.

    • After the opening or closing operation of the back door is suspended, pressing and holding the back door control switch causes the back door to operate in the opposite direction.

    Door Control Switch Assembly
    • Outputs signals to the power back door ECU.

    • When the back door is open, back door closing operations are performed by pressing and then releasing the door control switch assembly.

    • During an opening or closing operation of the back door, pressing the door control switch assembly suspends the operation.

    • After the opening or closing operation of the back door is suspended, pressing and then releasing the door control switch assembly causes the back door to operate in the opposite direction.

    • By pressing and holding the door control switch assembly, the power back door ECU activates the memory function.

    Back Door Opener Switch Assembly


    • Back Door Opener Switch


    • Outputs signals to the certification ECU*2 or main body ECU*3.

    • When the back door is closed or after the opening or closing operation is suspended, back door opening operations are performed by pressing the back door opener switch.

    • By pressing the back door opener switch during the back door opening or closing operation, the back door stops the operation.

    Kick Door Control Sensor Assembly*4
    • Detects touchless kick actuation operations and outputs signals to the power back door ECU.

    • When the back door is closed, back door opening operations are performed by performing the touchless kick actuation operation.

    • When the back door is open, back door closing operations are performed by performing the touchless kick actuation operation.

    • During an opening or closing operation of the back door, performing the touchless kick actuation operation suspends the operation.

    • After the opening or closing operation of the back door is suspended, performing the touchless kick actuation operation causes the back door to operate in the opposite direction.

    Touch Sensor (Power Back Door Sensor Assembly) Detects if an object is jammed in the back door during a closing operation of the back door and outputs a signal to the power back door ECU.
    Wireless Door Lock Buzzer Sounds to inform the user that the system is starting an operation.
    Back Door Buzzer Sounds to inform the user of the operation condition of the power back door system, and of any malfunctions in the system.

    Combination Meter Assembly


    • Power Back Door Main Switch


    • Outputs power back door main switch on and off signals to the main body ECU.

    • Receives hazard warning light flash request signals and flashes the hazard warning lights.*1

    Door Control Receiver Receives power back door button signals and sends them to the certification ECU*2 or main body ECU*3.
    Main Body ECU (Multiplex Network Body ECU)
    • Sends signals from the switches and ECUs to the power back door ECU.

    • Informs the user that the system is starting an operation by sounding the wireless door lock buzzer.

    ECM*5 Sends shift position signals to the main body ECU.
    Certification ECU (Smart Key ECU Assembly)*2 Sends back door opener switch and power back door button signals to the main body ECU.

    Electrical Key Transmitter Sub-assembly*2


    • Power Back Door Button


    • Transmits signals to the door control receiver.

    • When the back door is unlocked*6 and closed, back door opening operations are performed by pressing and holding the power back door button.

    • When the back door is open, back door closing operations are performed by pressing and holding the power back door button.

    • During an opening or closing operation of the back door, pressing the power back door button suspends the operation.

    • After the opening or closing operation of the back door is suspended, pressing and holding the power back door button causes the back door to operate in the opposite direction.

    Tech Tips

    Touchless kick actuation operation: The user carrying an electrical key transmitter sub-assembly stands around the center of the rear bumper while maintaining a certain distance (approximately equal to the length of the arm) from the rear bumper, waves a foot within approximately 100 mm (3.94 in.) from the surface of the rear bumper and moves the foot away.

  2. SYSTEM CONTROL

    Function Outline
    Opener Function
    • Upon receiving an on signal from the back door control switch, back door opener switch or power back door button with the back door closed, the power back door ECU actuates the back door lock motor to release the latch of the back door lock, and then actuates the power back door motor to open the back door.

    • Upon receiving an on signal from the back door control switch, door control switch assembly, back door opener switch or power back door button after the closing operation is suspended, the power back door ECU actuates the power back door motor to open the back door.

    Closer Function Upon receiving an on signal from the back door control switch, door control switch assembly or power back door button with the back door open or after the opening operation is suspended, the power back door ECU actuates the power back door motor to close the back door, and then actuates the back door lock motor to engage the latch of the back door lock.
    Jam Protection Function
    • Upon receiving signals from a touch sensor or the Hall ICs of the power back door motor, the power back door ECU detects that an object is jammed in the back door. If this occurs during an opening operation, operation of the back door is immediately suspended. If this occurs during a closing operation, the operation of the back door is suspended after moving upward a certain distance. The back door buzzer sounds twice when a jammed object is detected.

    • After the back door operation is canceled by the jam protection function, the back door can be operated by pressing one of the switches.

    Back Door Open/Close Speed Control Function In accordance with signals received from the Hall ICs of the power back door motor, the power back door ECU performs control so as to make the opening and closing speed of the back door even.
    Suspending Control Function

    By conducting any of the following operations during an opening or closing operation of the power back door, the operation will be canceled:


    • The power back door main switch is turned off.

    • The power back door button is pressed.

    • The back door control switch is pressed.

    • The back door opener switch is pressed.

    • The door control switch assembly is pressed.

    • The touchless kick actuation operation is performed.*1

    Memory Function
    • By pressing and holding the door control switch assembly for approximately 1.7 seconds while manually keeping the back door at the desired opening angle, the back door buzzer sounds 4 times as an answer back and the power back door ECU memorizes the angle. From the next time the back door is open, the back door will stop at the set angle.

    • By pressing and holding the door control switch assembly for approximately 7 seconds after the set angle is memorized, the memorized position is initialized.

    Assist Function When the back door is stopped and then manually operated in the closing direction, the power back door ECU drives the power back door motor to operate the back door until it is fully closed.
    Customization Function This function can be used to set the back door opening angle at 5 different positions.
    Switch Operation Function

    When one of the operation switches is operated, the following operations are performed in accordance with the back door condition:


    • When the back door control switch is pressed for approximately 0.8 seconds, an opening operation is performed if the back door is closed (or was suspended during a closing operation), and a closing operation is performed if the back door is open (or was suspended during an opening operation).

    • When the back door opener switch is pressed, an opening operation is performed.

    • When the door control switch assembly is pressed and then released, a closing operation is performed if the back door is open (or was suspended during an opening operation), and an opening operation is performed if the back door was stopped during a closing operation.

    • When the power back door button is pressed for approximately 0.8 seconds, an opening operation is performed if the back door is unlocked*2 and closed (or was suspended during a closing operation), and a closing operation is performed if the back door is open (or was suspended during an opening operation).

    Wireless One Motion Function
    • When the back door button is pressed with the back door locked, the back door is unlocked and opened.

    • Although this function is disabled by default, the function can be set via the customization function.

    Handle One Motion Function When the power back door opener switch is pressed with the back door locked, the back door is unlocked and opened.
    Touchless Kick Actuation Function*1
    • When the kick door control sensor assembly detects a touchless kick actuation operation with the back door locked, the back door is unlocked and opened.

    • When the kick door control sensor assembly detects a touchless kick actuation, an opening operation is performed if the back door is closed (or was suspended during a closing operation) and a closing operation is performed if the back door is open (or was suspended during an opening operation).

    *2: If the setting of the wireless one motion function is not turned ON by the customization.

    Tech Tips

    If power supply is stopped such as when the battery terminals are removed, initialization is required. The back door should be fully closed with power being supplied for initialization.


    1. Opener Function 1


      1. Pressing and holding the back door control switch or power back door button for 0.8 seconds or more with the back door unlocked and closed (or after a closing operation was suspended) starts an opening operation.

      2. When the power back door ECU detects a user operation, it sounds the wireless door lock buzzer and back door buzzer for 0.8 seconds, flashes the hazard lights 2 times*1, actuates the back door lock motor in order to release the latch and then actuates the power back door motor to open the back door. Also, the back door buzzer sounds intermittently while the power back door motor is operating.*2

        When conditions A, B, C, D and E listed above are met, a flash request signal is sent to the combination meter. The combination meter flashes the hazard lights 2 times.

        Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Off to Release Approximately 0.8 seconds after user operation is detected, the release rotation relay turns on and a release operation starts.
        (c) Power Back Door Motor Changes from Off to Opener
        • F. Courtesy switch is detected to be on.

        • G. Courtesy switch and latch switch are detected to be on.

        • H. Condition F or G listed above is not detected for approximately 1 second or more after the back door lock motor starts a release operation.

        When any one of the 3 conditions listed above is met while the back door lock motor is performing a release operation, the opener relay turns on and an opener operation starts.

        (d) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Release to Off When the latch switch is detected to be on, the release rotation relay turns off and the release operation stops.
        (e) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Off to Engage
        • I. After the latch switch is detected to be on, the Hall ICs of the power back door motor detect a movement of 20 edges*4 in the opening direction.

        • J. Approximately 3 seconds or more have elapsed since the back door lock motor was detected to be off.

        When condition I or J listed above is met, the engagement rotation relay turns on and a reverse rotation operation starts in order to return the sector gear and back door lock motor to the initial position.

        (f) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Engage to Off When the sector switch is detected to be on, the engagement rotation relay turns off and the reverse rotation operation stops.
        (g) Power Back Door Motor Changes from Opener to Off
        • K. Hall ICs of the power back door motor detect a movement of 15 edges*4 in the closing direction from the fully open position.

        • L. Power back door motor open output is detected continuously for approximately 30 seconds or more.

        When condition K or L listed above is met, the opener relay turns off and the opener operation stops.

        Back Door Buzzer*1 Changes from On to Off When the power back door motor is detected to be off, the back door buzzer stops sounding.

    2. Opener Function 2


      1. Pressing the back door opener switch with the back door closed (or after an operation was suspended), or pressing and then releasing the door control switch assembly after a closing operation was suspended, starts an opening operation.

      2. When the power back door ECU detects a user operation, it sounds the back door buzzer for 0.8 seconds, flashes the hazard lights 2 times*1, actuates the back door lock motor in order to release the latch and then actuates the power back door motor to open the back door. Also, the back door buzzer sounds intermittently while the power back door motor is operating.*2

        (d) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Release to Off When the latch switch is detected to be on, the release rotation relay turns off and the release operation stops.
        (e) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Off to Engage
        • I. After the latch switch is detected to be on, the Hall ICs of the power back door motor detect a movement of 20 edges*4 in the opening direction.

        • J. Approximately 3 seconds or more have elapsed since the back door lock motor was detected to be off.

        When condition I or J listed above is met, the engagement rotation relay turns on and a reverse rotation operation starts in order to return the sector gear and back door lock motor to the initial position.

    3. Opener Function 3 (Models with Touchless Kick Actuation Function)


      1. Performing a touchless kick actuation operation with the back door closed (or after a closing operation was suspended) starts an opening operation.

      2. When the power back door ECU detects a user operation, it sounds the back door buzzer for 0.8 seconds, flashes the hazard lights 2 times*1, actuates the back door lock motor in order to release the latch and then actuates the power back door motor to open the back door. Also, the back door buzzer sounds intermittently while the power back door motor is operating.*2

        • H. Condition F or G listed above is not detected for approximately 1 second or more after the back door lock motor starts a release operation.

        When any one of the 3 conditions listed above is met while the back door lock motor is performing a release operation, the opener relay turns on and an opener operation starts.

        (d) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Release to Off When the latch switch is detected to be on, the release rotation relay turns off and the release operation stops.
        (e) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Off to Engage
        • I. After the latch switch is detected to be on, the Hall ICs of the power back door motor detect a movement of 20 edges*4 in the opening direction.

        • J. Approximately 3 seconds or more have elapsed since the back door lock motor was detected to be off.

        When condition I or J listed above is met, the engagement rotation relay turns on and a reverse rotation operation starts in order to return the sector gear and back door lock motor to the initial position.

        (f) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Engage to Off When the sector switch is detected to be on, the engagement rotation relay turns off and the reverse rotation operation stops.
        (g) Power Back Door Motor Changes from Opener to Off
        • K. Hall ICs of the power back door motor detect a movement of 15 edges*4 in the closing direction from the fully open position.

        • L. Power back door motor open output is detected continuously for approximately 30 seconds or more.

        When condition K or L listed above is met, the opener relay turns off and the opener operation stops.

        Back Door Buzzer*1 Changes from On to Off When the power back door motor is detected to be off, the back door buzzer stops sounding.

    4. Closer Function 1


      1. Pressing and holding the back door control switch or power back door button for 0.8 seconds or more with the back door open (or after an opening operation was suspended) starts a closing operation.

      2. When the power back door ECU detects a user operation, it sounds the wireless door lock buzzer and back door buzzer for 0.8 seconds, flashes the hazard lights 2 times*1, actuates the power back door motor in order to close the back door and then actuates the back door lock motor to engage the latch. Also, the back door buzzer sounds intermittently while the power back door motor is operating.*2

        (c) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Off to Engage When the latch switch is detected to be off, the engagement rotation relay turns on and an engagement operation starts.
        (d) Power Back Door Motor Changes from Closer to Off
        • E. Courtesy switch is detected to be off.

        • F. Power back door motor closer output is detected continuously for approximately 30 seconds or more.

        • G. After the latch switch is detected to be off, the Hall ICs of the power back door motor detect a movement of 2 edges*3 in the closing direction.

        When any one of the 3 conditions listed above is met, the closer relay turns off and the closer operation stops. (If condition G listed above is met and the closer operation changes to off, output is reduced to secure the power needed to maintain the door position, and then after approximately 0.3 seconds, the output is stopped.)

        Back Door Buzzer*1 Changes from On to Off When the power back door motor is detected to be off, the back door buzzer stops sounding.
        (e) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Engage to Off When the latch switch, courtesy switch and pawl switch are detected to be off, the engagement rotation relay turns off and the engagement operation stops.
        (f) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Off to Release Approximately 0.1 seconds after the back door lock motor is detected to be off, the release rotation relay turns on and a reverse rotation operation starts in order to return the sector gear and back door lock motor to the initial position.
        (g) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Release to Off When the sector switch is detected to be on, the release rotation relay turns off and the reverse rotation operation stops.

    5. Closer Function 2


      1. Pressing and then releasing the door control switch assembly with the back door open (or after an opening operation was suspended) starts a closing operation.

      2. When the power back door ECU detects a user operation, it sounds the back door buzzer for 0.8 seconds, flashes the hazard lights 2 times*1, actuates the power back door motor in order to close the back door and then actuates the back door lock motor to engage the latch. Also, the back door buzzer sounds intermittently while the power back door motor is operating.*2

        (c) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Off to Engage When the latch switch is detected to be off, the engagement rotation relay turns on and an engagement operation starts.
        (d) Power Back Door Motor Changes from Closer to Off
        • E. Courtesy switch is detected to be off.

        • F. Power back door motor closer output is detected continuously for approximately 30 seconds or more.

        • G. After the latch switch is detected to be off, the Hall ICs of the power back door motor detect a movement of 2 edges*3 in the closing direction.

        When any one of the 3 conditions listed above is met, the closer relay turns off and the closer operation stops. (If condition G listed above is met and the closer operation changes to off, output is reduced to secure the power needed to maintain the door position, and then after approximately 0.3 seconds, the output is stopped.)

        Back Door Buzzer*1 Changes from On to Off When the power back door motor is detected to be off, the back door buzzer stops sounding.
        (e) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Engage to Off When the latch switch, courtesy switch and pawl switch are detected to be off, the engagement rotation relay turns off and the engagement operation stops.
        (f) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Off to Release Approximately 0.1 seconds after the back door lock motor is detected to be off, the release rotation relay turns on and a reverse rotation operation starts in order to return the sector gear and back door lock motor to the initial position.

    6. Closer Function 3 (Models with Touchless Kick Actuation Function)


      1. Performing a touchless kick actuation operation with the back door open (or after an opening operation was suspended) starts a closing operation.

      2. When the power back door ECU detects a user operation, it sounds the back door buzzer for 0.8 seconds, flashes the hazard lights 2 times*1, actuates the power back door motor in order to close the back door and then actuates the back door lock motor to engage the latch. Also, the back door buzzer sounds intermittently while the power back door motor is operating.*2

        (a) Kick Door Control Sensor Assembly Turned On User operation is detected.
        Back Door Buzzer Changes from Off to On Approximately 0.8 seconds after user operation is detected, the back door buzzer sounds for approximately 0.8 seconds. While the power back door motor is operating, the back door buzzer sounds intermittently.*1
        Hazard Lights*2 Changes from Off to On
        • A. Power back door main switch is on.

        • B. Power back door is open and not operating.

        • C. Auxiliary battery voltage is 10.5 V or more.

        • D. User operation is detected.

        When conditions A, B, C and D listed above are met, a flash request signal is sent to the combination meter. The combination meter flashes the hazard lights 2 times.

        (b) Power Back Door Motor Changes from Off to Closer Approximately 0.8 seconds after user operation is detected, the closer relay turns on and a closer operation starts.
        (c) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Off to Engage When the latch switch is detected to be off, the engagement rotation relay turns on and an engagement operation starts.
        (d) Power Back Door Motor Changes from Closer to Off
        • E. Courtesy switch is detected to be off.

        • F. Power back door motor closer output is detected continuously for approximately 30 seconds or more.

        • G. After the latch switch is detected to be off, the Hall ICs of the power back door motor detect a movement of 2 edges*3 in the closing direction.

        When any one of the 3 conditions listed above is met, the closer relay turns off and the closer operation stops. (If condition G listed above is met and the closer operation changes to off, output is reduced to secure the power needed to maintain the door position, and then after approximately 0.3 seconds, the output is stopped.)

        Back Door Buzzer*1 Changes from On to Off When the power back door motor is detected to be off, the back door buzzer stops sounding.
        (e) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Engage to Off When the latch switch, courtesy switch and pawl switch are detected to be off, the engagement rotation relay turns off and the engagement operation stops.
        (f) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Off to Release Approximately 0.1 seconds after the back door lock motor is detected to be off, the release rotation relay turns on and a reverse rotation operation starts in order to return the sector gear and back door lock motor to the initial position.
        (g) Back Door Lock Motor Changes from Release to Off When the sector switch is detected to be on, the release rotation relay turns off and the reverse rotation operation stops.

  3. FAIL-SAFE


    1. When the power back door ECU detects a malfunction in parts such as a motor or sensor, the system enters fail-safe mode. Refer to the Repair Manual for details.
