Tech Tips
When scrapping vehicles equipped with a seat belt pretensioner or disposing of a front seat outer belt (w/ seat belt pretensioner), always activate the seat belt pretensioner first, in accordance with the procedures described below. If any abnormality occurs during the activation of the seat belt pretensioner, contact the SERVICE DEPARTMENT of the DISTRIBUTOR.
Use the same procedure for the RH and LH sides.
The procedure listed below is for the RH side.
CAUTION:
Never dispose of a front seat outer belt that has an inactivated pretensioner.
The seat belt pretensioner produces a loud, exploding sound when it is activated. Perform the operation outside and where this will not be a nuisance to nearby residents.
When activating a front seat outer belt (w/ seat belt pretensioner), stand at least 10 m (33 ft) away from the front seat outer belt.
Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a front seat outer belt with an activated pretensioner.
Always wash your hands with water after completing the activation.
Do not apply water to a front seat outer belt that has an activated pretensioner.
When activating a seat belt pretensioner, always use the specified SST (SRS airbag deployment tool).
Perform the operation in a place away from electrical interference.
DISPOSE OF FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY (WHEN INSTALLED IN VEHICLE)
Tech Tips
Prepare a battery to power the activation of the seat belt pretensioner.
Check whether SST is functioning.
CAUTION:
When activating the seat belt pretensioner, always use the specified SST.
Connect the SST red clip to the positive battery terminal and the black clip to the negative battery terminal.
Tech Tips
Do not connect the yellow connector. The yellow connector is for connecting to the seat belt pretensioner.
Press the SST activation switch and check that the LED of the SST activation switch turns on.
CAUTION:
If the LED turns on when the activation switch is not being pressed, SST may be malfunctioning. Do not use SST.
Disconnect SST from the battery.
Disconnect the pretensioner connector.
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

Connect SST.
Note
To avoid damaging the SST connector and wire harness, do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock.
Move SST to at least 10 m (33 ft) away from the front of the vehicle.
Close the doors and windows of the vehicle.
Note
Do not damage the SST wire harness.
Connect the SST red clip to the positive battery terminal and the black clip to the negative battery terminal.
Activate the seat belt pretensioner.
Confirm that no one is inside the vehicle or within 10 m (33 ft) of the vehicle.
Press the SST activation switch and activate the seat belt pretensioner.
Tech Tips
The seat belt pretensioner and SST activation switch LED light operate simultaneously.
Disconnect SST.
Dispose of the front seat outer belt (w/ seat belt pretensioner).
Tech Tips
When scrapping a vehicle, activate the seat belt pretensioner, and then scrap the vehicle with the activated front seat outer belt still installed.
CAUTION:
Do not touch the front seat outer belt for at least 30 minutes after the seat belt pretensioner has been activated. It is very hot.
Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a front seat outer belt with a pretensioner that has been activated.
Always wash your hands with water after completing the operation.
Do not apply water to a front seat outer belt that has an activated pretensioner.
DISPOSE OF FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY (WHEN NOT INSTALLED IN VEHICLE)
Tech Tips
Prepare a battery as the power source to activate the seat belt pretensioner.
Note
When only disposing of the front seat outer belt (with the seat belt pretensioner), never use the customer's vehicle to activate the seat belt pretensioner.
Be sure to follow the procedures listed below when activating the seat belt pretensioner.
Remove the front seat outer belt Click here.
Wind the seat belt with the retractor.
When the seat belt is sufficiently wound, cut the seat belt approximately 10 cm (0.328 ft) from the retractor, as shown in the illustration.
Tech Tips
The retractor resistance increases in correlation with how much the seat belt is wound.
Connect SST.
Connect SST, then the yellow connector to the seat belt pretensioner.
Note
To avoid damaging the SST connector and wire harness, do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock.
Using a service-purpose wire harness for the vehicle, tie the seat belt pretensioner to the tire with a wheel attached.
Area | Measurement |
---|---|
A | 1.25 mm2or more (0.0019 in2or more) |
CAUTION:
If the wire harness is too thin or any other object is used to tie the seat belt pretensioner, it may be snapped by the shock when the pretensioner is deployed. Always use a wire harness for vehicle use, with a cross section of at least 1.25 mm2(0.0019 in2).
Tech Tips
To calculate the area of the stripped wire harness cross section:
Area = 3.14 x (Diameter)2divided by 4
Connect SST.
Note
To avoid damaging the SST connector and wire harness, do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock.
Set up the front seat outer belt, as shown in the illustration.
Move SST to at least 10 m (33 ft) away from the wheel.
Note
Do not damage the SST wire harness.
Activate the seat belt pretensioner.
Connect the SST red clip to the positive battery terminal and the black clip to the negative battery terminal.
Check that no one is within 10 m (33 ft) of the wheel.
