CYLINDER HEAD GASKET REMOVAL

PROCEDURE

  1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT

  2. REMOVE CAMSHAFT

  3. REMOVE NO. 2 CAMSHAFT

  4. REMOVE OIL LEVEL GAUGE GUIDE

  5. REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD

  6. DISCONNECT NO. 1 RADIATOR HOSE

  7. REMOVE SPEED SENSOR

  8. DISCONNECT HEATER HOSE

  9. REMOVE RADIATOR RESERVE TANK ASSEMBLY

  10. SEPARATE ENGINE WIRE

    1. Disconnect the engine wire connectors from the cylinder head sub-assembly.

      Remove the 2 nuts and wire harness bracket from the manual transaxle assembly.

      Lock

      Remove the screw and slide the lock.

    4. Separate the engine wire from the cylinder head sub-assembly.

  11. REMOVE NO. 1 WATER BY-PASS PIPE

  12. SUPPORT ENGINE ASSEMBLY

      Attachment Installation Position

      Using a jack and plate lift attachment, support the engine assembly.

    2. A327659

      Remove the 3 nuts and separate the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH from the cylinder head sub-assembly.

    3. A327660

      Remove the 3 bolts and engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH from the vehicle body.

    4. Lower the engine slightly.

      Note:

      Do not lower the engine excessively.

  13. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD SUB-ASSEMBLY

      Using the SST, uniformly loosen and remove the 11 cylinder head bolts and 8 plate washers in several steps in the order shown in the illustration.

      Note:
      • Cylinder head sub-assembly warpage or cracking could result from removing the bolts in the wrong order.

      • Do not drop the plate washers into the cylinder head sub-assembly.

    2. Remove the cylinder head sub-assembly from the cylinder block sub-assembly.

  14. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD GASKET

    1. Remove the cylinder head gasket from the cylinder block sub-assembly.
