ECD SYSTEM(w/ Glow Plug Controller), Diagnostic DTC:P011B

DTC Code DTC Name
P011B Engine Coolant Temperature / Intake Air Temperature Correlation

DESCRIPTION

This engine has multiple temperature sensors, an engine coolant temperature and intake air temperature sensor (built into the mass air flow meter), to detect the temperature while the engine is operating. A thermistor, whose resistance value varies according to the temperature, is built into each sensor. When the temperature is low, the resistance of the thermistor increases. When the temperature is high, the resistance drops. These variations in resistance are transmitted to the ECM as voltage changes. Based on these signals, the ECM increases the fuel injection volume to improve drivability with a cold engine.

DTC Detection Drive Pattern

P011B

When the following conditions are met

  • (1) 6 hours or more have elapsed since the engine stopped on the previous trip

  • (2) intake air temperature is 0 to 60°C (32 to 140°F) when engine cranked

  • (3) Cold engine start

Data List

P011B

  • Intake Air

  • Coolant Temp

Tip:

In order to satisfy the detection condition of this DTC, it is necessary to leave the vehicle with the engine stopped for 6 hours or more before restarting the engine.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Note:

When replacing the ECM, perform ECM Initialization and Registration.

Tip:
  • When the ECM must be replaced, before replacing the ECM, perform the "Learning Values Save" function using the GTS. Then after installing a new ECM, perform all of the initialization and registration procedures for the "Learning Values Write" function by following the instructions shown on the GTS display.

  • Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO P011B)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    4. Read the DTCs.

Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Trouble Codes

      Tip:

If any DTCs other than P011B are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

  2. READ VALUE USING GTS (INTAKE AIR AND COOLANT TEMP)

    1. Leave the vehicle for 6 hours or more.

      Tip:

It is necessary to leave the vehicle for 6 hours or more to create conditions similar to the DTC detection conditions.

    2. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Engine and ECT / Data List / Intake Air and Coolant Temp.

      Intake Air

    5. Read the Intake Air value on the GTS.

      Standard

Difference between the intake air temperature (Intake Air) and actual outside air temperature is within 10°C (18°F) or less.

      Tip:

Temperature readings on the vehicle outside temperature gauge (if equipped) are not suitable for comparing to the intake air temperature reading. The outside temperature gauge has a significant delay built in to prevent swings in the temperature display. Use an accurate thermometer to determine the outside air temperature.

    6. Read the Coolant Temp value on the GTS.

      Standard

Difference between the engine coolant temperature (Coolant Temp) and actual outside air temperature is within 10°C (18°F) or less.

      Tip:
      • If the result is not as specified, check that there are no heat sources such as a block heater in the engine compartment.

      • Temperature readings on the vehicle outside temperature gauge (if equipped) are not suitable for comparing to the intake air temperature reading. The outside temperature gauge has a significant delay built in to prevent swings in the temperature display. Use an accurate thermometer to determine the outside air temperature.
