AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY INSTALLATION


  1. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET

    1. Install the control cable bracket with the 2 bolts.

      Torque:
      28 N*m  { 286 kgf*cm, 21 ft.*lbf }

  2. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY


    1. Inspect the torque converter clutch assembly Click here.

  3. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY


    1. Install the torque converter clutch to the automatic transmission.

      Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure dimension A between the surface of the engine that contacts the transmission*1, and the surface of the drive plate that contacts the converter*2. (#)

    3. A01E1UYE01

      Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure dimension B shown in the illustration. Check that B is greater than A measured in step #.

      Standard dimension
      B = A + 1.00 mm (0.0394 in.) or more

  4. INSTALL TRANSFER ASSEMBLY

  5. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY

    1. Install the transmission to the engine with the 7 bolts.

      Torque:
      71 N*m  { 724 kgf*cm, 52 ft.*lbf, for 17 mm head }
      37 N*m  { 377 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf, for 14 mm head }
    2. A01DZ1CE01

      Install the manifold stay with the 3 bolts.

      Torque:
      44 N*m  { 449 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf, for bolt A }
      30 N*m  { 306 kgf*cm, 22 ft.*lbf, for bolt B }
      71 N*m  { 724 kgf*cm, 52 ft.*lbf, for bolt C }
    3. A01DXSIE01

      Hold the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench and install the 6 torque converter clutch setting bolts.

      Torque:
      41 N*m  { 418 kgf*cm, 30 ft.*lbf }

    4. Install the flywheel housing dust seal.

  6. CONNECT CONNECTOR


    1. Connect the transmission connectors.


      1. Connect the temperature sensor connector.

      2. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.

      3. Connect the 2 speed sensor connectors.

      4. Connect the transmission wire connector.

    2. Connect the transfer connectors.


      1. Connect the indicator switch connector (for 4WD).

      2. Connect the speedometer sensor connector.

      3. Connect the indicator switch connector (for L4).

      4. Connect the indicator switch connector (neutral).

    3. Install the heat insulator to the park/neutral position switch with the 2 bolts.

      Torque:
      7.5 N*m  { 76 kgf*cm, 66 in.*lbf }

    4. Tilt up the transmission.

    5. Connect the ground cable with the nut.

      Torque:
      5.5 N*m  { 56 kgf*cm, 49 in.*lbf }

  7. INSTALL REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR

    1. Install the engine mounting insulator to the transmission with the 4 bolts.

      Torque:
      47 N*m  { 479 kgf*cm, 35 ft.*lbf }

  8. INSTALL NO. 3 FRAME CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. Install the 4 set bolts of the engine mounting insulator.

      Torque:
      27 N*m  { 275 kgf*cm, 20 ft.*lbf }

    2. Install the frame crossmember with the 4 bolts and 4 nuts.

      Torque:
      50 N*m  { 510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf }

  9. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY


    1. Install the starter assembly Click here.

  10. INSTALL FRONT FENDER SEAL


    1. Install the seal with the 5 clips.

  11. CONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHIFT CABLE ASSEMBLY

    1. Connect the control cable with a new clip.

    2. Connect the control cable with the nut.

      Torque:
      14 N*m  { 143 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf }

  12. INSTALL OIL COOLER TUBE

    1. Loosely install the tip of the oil cooler tube inlet to the automatic transmission by hand.

    2. Loosely install the tip of the oil cooler tube outlet to the automatic transmission by hand.

    3. Install the 3 clamps with the 3 bolts.

      Torque:
      5.0 N*m  { 50 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf, for A }
      12 N*m  { 122 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf, for B }

      Using a union nut wrench, tighten the inlet and outlet tubes.

      Torque:
      34 N*m  { 350 kgf*cm, 25 ft.*lbf }

  13. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. Coat a new O-ring with ATF, and install it to the oil filler tube.

    2. Install the oil filler tube with the 2 bolts.

      Torque:
      12 N*m  { 122 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf }

    3. Install the oil dipstick.

  14. INSTALL PROPELLER WITH CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSEMBLY


    1. Install the propeller with center bearing shaft assembly Click here.

  15. INSTALL FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY


    1. Install the front propeller shaft assembly Click here.

  16. INSTALL TRANSFER CASE LOWER PROTECTOR


    1. Install the transfer case lower protector with the 4 bolts.

      Torque:
      18 N*m  { 184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf }

  17. INSTALL FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY


    1. Install the front exhaust pipe assembly Click here.

  18. INSTALL TRANSFER HIGH AND LOW SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY

      While pushing the select return spring to the left with the end of the transfer high and low shift lever, insert the end of the shift lever into the shift fork.

    2. A01DXRLE03

      While holding down the shift lever cap, install the snap ring to install the transfer high and low shift lever.

    3. Return the transfer front drive shift boot to its original position.

  19. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER BOOT ASSEMBLY


    1. Install the shift lever boot with the 4 screws.

  20. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION

    1. Remove the nut and disconnect the control cable.

    2. Remove the clip and disconnect the control cable from the control cable bracket.

    3. A01DVL2E01

      Push the control shaft rearward as much as possible.

    4. Return the control shaft lever 2 notches to the N position.

    5. While holding the control shaft lever slightly toward the R position side, tighten the nut.

      Torque:
      14 N*m  { 143 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf }

  21. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID

    Fluid type
    Toyota Genuine ATF Type T-IV

  22. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

  23. PERFORM INITIALIZATION


    1. Perform initialization Click here.

      Note

      Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal.

  24. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION


    1. When moving the shift lever from P to R with the ignition switch ON and the brake pedal depressed, make sure that the shift lever moves smoothly and correctly into position.

    2. Start the engine and make sure that the vehicle moves forward after moving the shift lever from N to D, and moves rearward after shifting to R.

      If the results are not as specified, inspect the park/neutral position switch and check the shift lever.

  25. INSTALL CONSOLE BOX ASSEMBLY

  32. INSTALL NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER

    28 N*m  { 286 kgf*cm, 21 ft.*lbf }

  33. INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER

    Torque:
    28 N*m  { 286 kgf*cm, 21 ft.*lbf }
