CYLINDER BLOCK REASSEMBLY

Tip:

PROCEDURE

  1. INSTALL STUD BOLT

    U121294E02
    Note:

    If the stud bolt is deformed or the threads are damaged, replace it.

    1. Using a "TORX" socket E6, install the stud bolts as shown in the illustration.

  2. INSTALL NO. 1 OIL NOZZLE SUB-ASSEMBLY

      Using a 5 mm socket hexagon wrench, install the 4 oil nozzles with the 4 bolts.

  3. INSTALL PISTON

    Tip:

    Perform "Inspection After Repairs" after replacing the piston (Click here).

      Using a screwdriver, install a new snap ring at one end of the piston pin hole.

      Service Hole

      Tip:

      Make sure that the end gap of the snap ring is not aligned with the service hole cutout portion of the piston.

    2. Gradually heat the piston to approximately 80 to 90°C (176 to 194°F).

      Align the front marks of the piston and connecting rod, insert the connecting rod into the piston, and then push in the piston pin with your thumb until the pin comes into contact with the snap ring.

      Tip:

      The piston and pin are a matched set.

    4. Using a screwdriver, install a new snap ring on the other end of the piston pin hole.

      Tip:

      Make sure that the end gap of the snap ring is not aligned with the pin hole cutout portion of the piston.

      Check the fitting condition between the piston and piston pin by trying to move the piston back and forth on the piston pin.

  4. INSTALL PISTON RING SET

    Note:

    During installation, use a type A piston ring set for the type A piston, and a type B piston ring set for the type B piston.

      The location of the oil ring expander end gap is free.

  5. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT BEARING

    1. A151015E04

      Install the upper bearing (except No. 3 journal).

      1. Install the upper bearing to the cylinder block.

        Tip:

        Both sides of the oil groove in the cylinder block should be visible through the oil feed holes in the bearing. The amount visible on each side of the holes should be equal.

      2. Using a scale, measure the distance between the cylinder block edge and the upper bearing edge.

        Do not apply engine oil to the bearings or the contact surfaces.

      Install the upper bearing (for No. 3 journal).

      1. Install the upper bearing to the cylinder block.

        Tip:

    3. Install the lower bearing.

      1. Install the lower bearing onto the bearing cap.

        Using a vernier caliper, measure the distance between the bearing cap edge and the lower bearing edge.

  6. INSTALL UPPER CRANKSHAFT THRUST WASHER

      Install the 2 thrust washers to the No. 3 journal position of the cylinder block with the oil grooves facing outward.

      Install a resin coated upper crankshaft thrust washer only for the rear side of the engine.

    2. Apply engine oil to the crankshaft thrust washers.

  7. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT

    1. Apply engine oil to the upper bearings and install the crankshaft to the cylinder block.

    2. Apply engine oil to the lower bearing.

      Examine the number marks and install the bearing caps to the cylinder block.

    4. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and under the heads of the bearing cap bolts.

      Temporarily install the 10 crankshaft bearing cap bolts.

      Push on the crankshaft bearing caps with your hand until the clearance between the crankshaft bearing caps and cylinder block is less than 5 mm (0.197 in.).

      Using a plastic-faced hammer, lightly tap the bearing caps to ensure a proper fit.

    8. Install the crankshaft bearing cap bolts.

      Note:

      The crankshaft bearing cap bolts are tightened in 2 progressive steps.

    9. Step 1:

        Install and uniformly tighten the 10 crankshaft bearing cap bolts in several steps in the sequence shown in the illustration.

    10. Step 2:

      1. A390230E01

        Mark the front of the bearing cap bolts with paint.

      2. Tighten the bearing cap bolts 90° in the sequence shown in step 1.

    11. Check that the paint marks are now at a 90° angle to the front.

    12. Check that the crankshaft turns smoothly.

    13. Check the crankshaft thrust clearance (Click here).

  8. INSTALL CONNECTING ROD BEARING

    1. Install the connecting rod bearings to the connecting rods and connecting rod caps.

      Using a vernier caliper, measure the distance between the edges of the connecting rods and connecting rod caps, and the connecting rod caps and connecting rod bearings.

  9. INSTALL PISTON SUB-ASSEMBLY WITH CONNECTING ROD

    1. Apply engine oil to the cylinder walls, pistons, and the surfaces of the connecting rod bearings.

      Using a piston ring compressor, push the correctly numbered piston and connecting rod assembly into the cylinder with the front mark of the piston facing forward.

      • Match the numbered connecting rod cap with the connecting rod.

    5. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and under the heads of the connecting rod cap bolts.

        Mark the front of the connecting rod cap bolts with paint.

      2. Tighten the cap bolts 90° as shown in the illustration.

    9. Check that the crankshaft turns smoothly.

    10. Check the connecting rod thrust clearance (Click here).

  10. INSTALL NO. 1 VENTILATION CASE

      Apply seal packing in a continuous line as shown in the illustration.

      Note:
      • Remove any oil from the contact surface.

      • Install the ventilation case within 3 minutes and tighten the bolts and nuts within 15 minutes after applying seal packing.

      • Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installation.
