DESCRIPTION

A flat-type knock sensor (non-resonant type) has a structure that can detect vibrations between approximately 5 kHz and 15 kHz.

Knock sensor is fitted onto the engine block to detect engine knocking.

The knock sensor contains a piezoelectric element which generates a voltage when it becomes deformed.

The voltage is generated when the engine block vibrates due to knocking. Any occurrence of engine knocking can be suppressed by delaying the ignition timing.

DTC No. DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area
P0327

Knock sensor voltage is less than 0.154 V for 1 second or more (bank 1).

(1 trip detection logic)

  • Open or short in knock sensor circuit (bank 1)

  • Knock sensor (bank 1)

  • ECM

P0328

Knock sensor voltage is more than 4.838 V for 1 second or more (bank 1).

(1 trip detection logic)

P0332

Knock sensor voltage is less than 0.154 V for 1 second or more (bank 2).

(1 trip detection logic)

  • Open or short in knock sensor circuit (bank 2)

  • Knock sensor (bank 2)

  • ECM

P0333

Knock sensor voltage is more than 4.838 V for 1 second or more (bank 2).

(1 trip detection logic)

Tech Tips

When DTC P0327, P0328, P332 or P0333 is stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ignition timing is delayed to its maximum retardation. Fail-safe mode continues until the ignition switch is turned off.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

If the output voltage transmitted by the knock sensor remains low or high for more than 1 second, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction in the sensor circuit and the ECM illuminates the MIL and sets a DTC.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

  1. A004ISCE17
  2. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

  3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

  4. Clear DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation) Click here.

  5. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

  6. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

  7. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher.

  8. With the vehicle stationary, depress the accelerator pedal and maintain an engine speed of between 2500 and 3000 rpm for 40 seconds or more [A].

  9. Drive the vehicle at 10 km/h (6.25 mph) or more for 1 minute or more [B].

    CAUTION:

When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

  10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.

  11. Read pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  12. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

  13. Input the DTC: P0327, P0328, P0332 or P0333.

  14. Check the DTC judgment result.

    GTS Display Description

    • System normal

    ABNORMAL
    • DTC judgment completed

    • System abnormal

    INCOMPLETE
    • DTC judgment not completed

    • Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions

    N/A
    • Unable to perform DTC judgment

    • Number of DTCs which do not fulfill DTC preconditions has reached ECU memory limit

    Tech Tips

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

  15. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or N/A and no DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Click here.

    Tech Tips

    • If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Tech Tips

  • If DTC P0327 or P0332 is displayed, check the knock sensor circuit for the right bank (bank 1).

  • If DTC P0328 or P0333 is displayed, check the knock sensor circuit for the left bank (bank 2).

  • Read freeze frame data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
