  • ROTATION ANGLE SENSOR INITIALIZATION AND TORQUE SENSOR ZERO POINT CALIBRATION (USING SST CHECK WIRE)

    Note

Clear the rotation angle sensor calibration value, initialize the rotation angle sensor, and calibrate the torque sensor zero point if any of the following has occurred:

    • The power steering ECU assembly has been replaced.

    • The steering column assembly has been replaced.

    • Steering effort differs between turning left and right.

    1. Check for DTCs.

      1. Check for DTCs Click here.

        Note

        • If DTC C1516/16 (Torque Sensor Zero Point Adjustment Incomplete) is stored, the torque sensor zero point cannot be calibrated. Clear the DTCs before starting calibration.

        • If DTC C1526/18 (Rotation Angle Sensor Initialization Incomplete) is stored, the rotation angle sensor cannot be initialized. Clear the DTCs before starting initialization.

        • If DTCs other than C1516/16 and C1526/18 are output, refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart Click here.

    2. Perform pre-calibration check.

      1. Turn the power switch off.

      2. Disconnect the L54 power steering ECU assembly connector.

      3. Turn the power switch on (IG).

Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

        Note

If the measured value is 9 V or less, the calibration cannot be performed. Recharge or replace the auxiliary battery and then perform calibration.

      5. Turn the power switch off.

      6. Connect the L54 power steering ECU assembly connector.

      7. Clear the sensor calibration value.

        1. Set the steering wheel to the center point and align the front tires straight ahead.

        2. Turn the power switch off.

    *1 EPS Warning Light

Check that the EPS warning light blinks and then remains illuminated.

    Tech Tips

The EPS warning light illumination indicates that DTCs C1515/15 and C1525/17 have been stored.

  • Turn the power switch off.

    Note

After clearing the sensor calibration value, rotation angle sensor initialization or zero point calibration cannot be performed if the power switch is on (IG).

  • Torque sensor zero point calibration.

    Note

As torque sensor zero point calibration cannot be performed if DTC C1515/15 has not been stored, be sure to clear the sensor calibration value before performing torque sensor zero point calibration.

    1. Set the steering wheel to the center point and align the front tires straight ahead.

    2. Turn the power switch off.

    4. Turn the power switch on (IG) and then connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG).

      Note

Do not touch the steering wheel during the calibration (for 3 seconds).

      Tech Tips

The EPS warning light remains illuminated if calibration has completed.

    5. With terminals 12 (TS) and 4 (CG), and 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) connected, and the power switch on (IG), continue to perform rotation angle sensor initialization.

  • Rotation angle sensor initialization.

    Note

As rotation angle sensor initialization cannot be performed if DTC C1525/17 has not been stored, be sure to clear the sensor calibration value and torque sensor zero point calibration before performing rotation angle sensor initialization.

    1. Set the steering wheel to the center point and align the front tires straight ahead.

      Note

Make sure that terminals 12 (TS) and 4 (CG), and 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) are connected, and the power switch is on (IG).

    2. Disconnect and reconnect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG).

      Tech Tips

Disconnecting and reconnecting terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) allows the power steering ECU assembly to change modes to rotation angle sensor initialization mode.

    3. Turn the steering wheel to the left and right 45° or more. Then turn the steering wheel to the left or right 90° or more.

      Note

Do not turn the steering wheel sharply.

      Tech Tips

      • When the calibration has been completed normally, the EPS warning light goes from being illuminated to blinking (at 0.125 second intervals).

      • The EPS warning light remains illuminated if calibration has not completed normally. In this case, check for DTCs and perform calibration again if DTC C1515/15 and/or C1525/17 is/are output. When performing calibration again, perform it in the following order: clear sensor calibration value and perform torque sensor zero point calibration and rotation angle sensor initialization. If DTCs other than C1515/15 and C1525/17 are output, go to Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart Click here.

    4. Disconnect SST from the DLC3.

    5. Turn the power switch off.

  • ASSIST MAP WRITING (USING THE GTS)

    Note

Perform assist map writing if any of the following conditions occur:

The power steering ECU assembly has been replaced.

    Tech Tips

If DTC C1581/26 is output after torque sensor zero point calibration, perform assist map writing.

    1. Turn the power switch off.

    2. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    3. Turn the power switch on (IG).

    4. Turn the GTS on.

    5. Enter the following menus: Chassis / EMPS / Utility / Signal Check.

      Tech Tips

      • Follow the instructions on the GTS to perform Signal Check.

      • With DTC C1581/26 output, performing Signal Check will cause the power steering ECU assembly to enter Test Mode and the assist map will be written automatically.

    6. Wait for at least 1 second.

    7. Check for DTCs Click here.

      Tech Tips

After writing the assist map, if DTC C1581/26 is output, perform the troubleshooting procedure for DTC C1581/26 Click here.
