COOLANT REPLACEMENT
PROCEDURE
REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER
-
Remove the 2 screws, 4 bolts, 8 clips and No. 1 engine under cover.
-
DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
CAUTION:Do not remove the reservoir cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized, hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.
-
*1
Vinyl Tube
Install a vinyl tube to the radiator drain cock plug on the radiator side.
Loosen the radiator drain cock plug.

-
Tip:Collect the coolant in a container and dispose of it according to the regulations in your area.
Remove the reservoir cap and drain the engine coolant.
-
ADD ENGINE COOLANT
Tighten the radiator drain cock plug.
-

B Line
Add engine coolant to the radiator reservoir filler opening until it is filled to the B line at the base of the reservoir filler neck.
Standard Capacity
Item
Specified Condition
for Manual Transaxle
5.8 liters (6.1 US qts, 5.1 Imp. qts)
for CVT
6.0 liters (6.3 US qts, 5.3 Imp. qts)
Note:Never use water as a substitute for engine coolant.
Tip:The B line is the lower edge of the inner wall of the filler neck.
TOYOTA vehicles are filled with TOYOTA SLLC at the factory. In order to avoid damage to the engine cooling system and other technical problems, only use TOYOTA SLLC or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology (coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology is a combination of low phosphates and organic acids).
Press the radiator hose sub-assembly and No. 2 radiator hoses several times by hand, and then check the level of the engine coolant. If the engine coolant level drops below the B line, add engine coolant to the B line.
Install the reservoir cap.
Start the engine and warm it up until the cooling fan operates.
Set the air conditioning as follows while warming up the engine.
Specified Condition
Item
Condition
for Manual Air Conditioning System
Fan speed: Any setting except off
Temperature: Toward WARM
Air conditioning switch: Off
for Automatic Air Conditioning System
Temperature: Toward MAX (HOT)
Air conditioning switch: Off
Maintain the engine speed at 2000 to 2500 rpm and warm up the engine until the cooling fan operates.
Note:Make sure that the radiator reservoir assembly still has some engine coolant in it.
Pay attention to the needle of the coolant temperature meter. Make sure that the needle does not show an abnormally high temperature.
If there is not enough coolant, the engine may burn out or overheat.
After starting the engine, if the radiator reservoir assembly does not have any engine coolant, perform the following: 1) stop the engine, 2) wait until the coolant has cooled down, and 3) add coolant until the coolant is filled to the B line.
Run the engine at 2000 rpm until the engine coolant level has stabilized.
Press the radiator hose sub-assembly and No. 2 radiator hoses several times by hand to bleed air.
CAUTION:Wear protective gloves.
Be careful as the radiator hoses are hot.
Keep your hands away from the cooling fan.
Stop the engine and wait until the coolant cools down to ambient temperature.
Check that the engine coolant level is between the FULL and LOW lines.
If the engine coolant level is below the LOW line, repeat all of the procedures above.
If the engine coolant level is above the FULL line, drain engine coolant so that the engine coolant level is between the FULL and LOW lines.
INSPECT FOR COOLANT LEAK
INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER
Install the No. 1 engine under cover with the 2 screws, 4 bolts and 8 clips.
