Note:
  • This transmission requires Toyota Genuine ATF WS.

  • After servicing the transmission, you must follow the ATF adjustment procedure.

  • Maintain the vehicle in a horizontal position while adjusting the fluid level.

PROCEDURE

  1. PRELIMINARY PROCEDURES

      Shaft

      *4

      Pin

      *5

      Step

Using compressed air, etc., blow dust off the thermostat cap to clean it.

    3. Using a screwdriver, push in the shaft of the thermostat.

      Tip:
      • Distance pushed: 5.5 to 7.0 mm (0.217 to 0.276 in.)

      • Push in the shaft until the screwdriver contacts the step inside the cap.

    4. With the shaft of the thermostat pressed in, push a pin into a hole in the side of the thermostat cap. Insert the pin until it passes through the hole in the other side of the thermostat cap to fix the shaft in place.

      Tip:

Pin diameter: 1.0 to 1.8 mm (0.0394 to 0.0709 in.)

  2. BEFORE FILLING TRANSMISSION

    • When you have replaced the entire transmission, transmission pan, drain plug, valve body and/or torque converter, proceed to the "Transmission Fill" procedures.

    • When you have replaced the transmission hose and/or output shaft oil seal, proceed to the "Fluid Temperature Check" procedures.

      *a

      Specified Fluid Level

Fill the transmission through the refill hole until fluid begins to trickle out of the overflow tube.

    3. Reinstall the overflow plug.

    4. Fill the transmission with the amount of fluid listed in the table below.

      Reference Capacity

      Procedure Performed

      Fill Amount

Transmission pan and drain plug removal

1.7 liters (1.8 US qts, 1.5 Imp. qts)

      Transmission valve body removal

4.3 liters (4.5 US qts, 3.8 Imp. qts)

      Torque converter removal

5.4 liters (5.7 US qts, 4.8 Imp. qts)

    5. Install the refill plug.

      Tip:

If you cannot fill the listed amount of fluid, perform the following:

      1. Start the engine and idle it.

        Note:

Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system are off.

      2. Move the shift lever through the entire gear range to circulate the fluid.

      3. Wait for 30 seconds with the engine idling.

      4. Stop the engine.

      5. Remove the refill plug.

      6. Fill the transmission with the remaining fluid until the amount in the table has been filled.

      7. Install the refill plug.

  4. FLUID TEMPERATURE CHECK

    Note:

The ATF temperature can be confirmed by using the intelligent tester.

    1. Turn the engine switch off.

    2. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    3. Turn the engine switch on (IG).

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Data List / A/T Oil Temperature 1.

Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Data List

      Tester Display

      A/T Oil Temperature 1

    5. Check the ATF temperature.

      Note:

If the ATF temperature is higher than 46°C (115°F), turn the engine switch off and wait until the fluid temperature drops to below 46°C (115°F).

  5. FLUID LEVEL CHECK

    Note:
    • It is necessary to change to temperature detection mode in order to idle the vehicle appropriately.

    • The ATF temperature must be between 46 and 52°C (115 and 126°F) to accurately check the fluid level.

    1. When using the intelligent tester:

Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Active Test / Connect the TC and TE1.

      Standard condition

Indicator lights in the combination meter blink.

Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Active Test

      Standard condition

Indicator lights in the combination meter blink.

    3. Start the engine and idle it.

      Note:

Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system are off.

    4. Slowly move the shift lever from P to S, and then change the gear from 1st to 5th. Then return the shift lever to P.

      Tip:

Slowly move the shift lever to circulate the fluid through each part of the transmission.

    5. C220038

Move the shift lever to D, and quickly move it back and forth between N and D (once within 1.5 seconds) for at least 6 seconds. This will activate the fluid temperature detection mode.

      Standard condition

Indicator light [D] remains illuminated for 2 seconds and then turns off.

    6. When using the intelligent tester:

Return the shift lever to P and terminate the Active Test on the intelligent tester.

    7. When not using the intelligent tester:

      Disconnect SST from the DLC3.

    8. Allow the engine to idle until the fluid temperature reaches 46 to 52°C (115 to 126°F).

      Tip:

The indicator [D] will come on again when the fluid temperature reaches 46°C (115°F) and will blink if it is higher than 52°C (126°F).
