VEHICLE PROXIMITY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM

  1. FUNCTION OF MAIN COMPONENTS

    Component Function
    Vehicle Approaching Speaker Controller
    • Controls starting and stopping of the operation, sound pitch and volume level based on signals received from an ECU, sensor and switch.

    • Controls the illumination and blinking condition of the vehicle approaching speaker switch indicator light.

    Vehicle Approaching Speaker Switch

    • Indicator Light

    • Disables the vehicle proximity notification system operation by pressing the switch.

    • Illuminates the indicator light while the notification sound will be not output.

    • Blinks the indicator light when there is a malfunction in the vehicle proximity notification system.

Vehicle Approaching Speaker Assembly Emits warning sounds based on an operation signal received from the vehicle approaching speaker controller.
Hybrid Vehicle Control ECU Receives shift position signals and engine rotation signals, and outputs operation cancel permission signals to the vehicle approaching speaker assembly.
Combination Meter Assembly Sends a vehicle speed signal to the vehicle approaching speaker controller.
No. 3 Semiconductor Power Integration ECU Sends a stop light on signal to the vehicle approaching speaker controller.
Stop Light Switch Assembly Sends a brake pedal state signal to the No. 3 semiconductor power integration ECU.
    DLC3
    • The Global TechStream (GTS) can be connected to read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) of malfunctions.

    • The Global TechStream (GTS) can be connected to change settings as desired by the user.

  2. OPERATING CONDITION

    Condition Outline
    System Active

The vehicle proximity notification system operates (emits a warning sound) when either of the following conditions is met:

    • The vehicle speed is 0 km/h (0 mph), the engine is stopped, the stop lights are turned from on to off and the shift position is in any position other than P.*

    • The vehicle speed is 25 km/h (15 mph) or less, the engine is stopped and the shift position is in any position other than P.

    System Stop

The vehicle proximity notification system stops operating when any of the following conditions is met:

    • The engine starts.

    • The vehicle speed is more than 25 km/h (15 mph).

    • With a vehicle speed of 0 km/h (0 mph), the stop light on signal is received continuously for more than approximately 1 second.

    • With a vehicle speed of 0 km/h (0 mph), the shift position P signal is received continuously for more than approximately 1 second.

    • With a vehicle speed of 0 km/h (0 mph), the stop light off signal is received continuously for more than approximately 3 seconds (such as when the vehicle is stopped, and the shift position is in N with the parking brake applied).

    • The vehicle approaching speaker switch tuned on.

    Tech Tips

*: When the system is stopped due to a vehicle speed of 0 km/h (0 mph) and the stop light switch assembly off signal is received continuously for more than approximately 3 seconds, the system operates again when any of the following conditions is met:

    • - A vehicle speed signal of 1 km/h (1 mph) or more is received.

    • - The brake pedal is operated.

  3. SYSTEM CONTROL

    Control Outline
    Vehicle Speed Linked Control
    • The warning sound is emitted by controlling the pitch of the sound in accordance with the vehicle speed.

    • The warning sound becomes higher as the vehicle accelerates and it becomes lower as the vehicle decelerates.

Audibility Enhancing Control*1 When the vehicle proximity notification system is not sounding and the vehicle is stopped (vehicle speed of 0 km/h (0 mph)), if the system operates due to a vehicle speed signal or brake pedal operation (system is changed from being disabled to enabled), the warning sound volume becomes higher than usual for approximately 1 second to warn people around the vehicle that the vehicle may move.
Fade-in/Fade Out Control When the system starts operating, the warning sound volume gradually increases*2, and when system operation is stopped, the sound volume gradually decreases.

    Tech Tips

*1: The customizable functions can be turned on or off using the Global TechStream (GTS). For details, refer to the Repair Manual.

*2: When audibility enhancing control is performed, the system starts operating using this control.

  4. DIAGNOSIS

    1. The vehicle approaching speaker controller also stores Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). The DTCs can be read by using the Global TechStream (GTS). For details, refer to the Repair Manual.

    2. When an output malfunction is detected in the vehicle approaching speaker assembly, the vehicle approaching speaker controller stores a DTC and informs the driver by blinking the indicator light of the vehicle approaching speaker switch for approximately 16 seconds.
