PEDESTRIAN PROTECTION SYSTEM

  1. FUNCTION OF MAIN COMPONENTS

    Component Function
Front Pop Up Hood Lifter LH (Pop Up Hood Lifter Assembly LH) Instantaneously pushes up the pistons using the gas generated by the inflators according to ignition signals from the pedestrian detection ECU assembly to raise the engine hood.
Front Pop Up Hood Lifter RH (Pop Up Hood Lifter Assembly RH)
Rear Pop Up Hood Lifter LH (No. 2 Pop Up Hood Lifter Assembly LH)
Rear Pop Up Hood Lifter RH (No. 2 Pop Up Hood Lifter Assembly RH)

    Pedestrian Detection Chamber Assembly

    • Pedestrian Detection Chamber

    • Pedestrian Protection Sensor LH

    • Pedestrian Protection Sensor RH

Detects chamber (tube) deformation and sends signals used for ignition judgment to the pedestrian detection ECU assembly when a collision occurs between the vehicle (front bumper) and a pedestrian.
Yawrate Sensor Sends yawrate sensor signals to the pedestrian detection ECU assembly via CAN communication.
Steering Sensor Sends steering angle signals to the pedestrian detection ECU assembly via CAN communication.
    Pedestrian Detection ECU Assembly
    • Performs ignition judgment based on signals from the pedestrian protection sensors and sends ignition signals to each pop up hood lifter when a pedestrian collides with the vehicle.

    • Performs a system failure diagnosis by connecting and operating the Global TechStream (GTS) when a malfunction occurs.

Airbag ECU Assembly Sends the operation status of the SRS airbag system to the pedestrian detection ECU assembly via CAN communication.
ECM Sends engine speed signals and the operation status of the engine control system to the pedestrian detection ECU assembly via CAN communication.
Skid Control ECU Assembly*1 Sends vehicle speed signals, brake pedal operation signals and the operation status of the brake control system to the pedestrian detection ECU assembly via CAN communication.

    Brake Actuator Assembly*2

    • Skid Control ECU

FR Steering Control ECU*3 Sends the operation status of the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) system to the pedestrian detection ECU assembly via CAN communication.
    Combination Meter Assembly
    • During a pop up hood system malfunction, warns the driver by displaying a message in the multi-information display according to the nature of the problem in the system, illuminating the master warning indicator, pop up hood warning indicator and sounding the buzzer.

    • Sends the illumination status of warning indicators to the pedestrian detection ECU assembly via CAN communication.

Central Gateway ECU (Network Gateway ECU) Relays the signal between the CAN communication lines.
DLC3 The Global TechStream (GTS) can be connected to read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) of malfunctions.

  2. FUNCTION

    1. Pedestrian Collision

      1. The pop up hood system operates when the vehicle (front bumper) collides with a pedestrian and a pressure change is detected in the pedestrian detection chamber.

      2. The pop up hood system is designed to pop up in a collision with a pedestrian when driving at approximately 25 to 55 km/h (16 to 34 mph).

        Note

The pop up hood system operates when the front bumper collides with a pedestrian or any obstacle.

      3. For a pedestrian collision, if a pedestrian protection sensor detects an impact, it informs the pedestrian detection ECU assembly and causes the pop up hood lifter assemblies to be deployed.

    2. Non-operation Case

      1. When a pedestrian collides with the vehicle but the sensor ignition judgment standard is not met depending on the vehicle speed and collision situation, the pop up hood system may not operate.

  3. SYSTEM CONTROL

    1. Pedestrian Collision

      1. The pop up hood lifters are deployed based on signals from the pedestrian protection sensors and skid control ECU.

    2. Primary Check Illumination Control

      1. After the engine switch is turned on (IG), the pedestrian detection ECU assembly illuminates the pop up hood warning indicator in the combination meter assembly for approximately 6 seconds and conducts the primary check. During the primary check, the ignition of pop up hood lifters is prohibited and a diagnosis of the pedestrian detection ECU assembly is performed. If a malfunction is detected during the primary check, the pop up hood warning indicator will remain on even after 6 seconds have elapsed.

  4. DIAGNOSIS

    1. If the pedestrian detection ECU assembly detects a malfunction in the pop up hood system, the pedestrian detection ECU assembly stores the malfunction data in memory in addition to illuminating the pop up hood warning indicator.

    2. The pedestrian detection ECU assembly outputs malfunction data and 5-digit Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) to the Global TechStream (GTS).

    3. The 5-digit DTCs can be read by connecting the Global TechStream (GTS) to the DLC3. For details, refer to the Repair Manual.

    4. If the pop up hood lifters deploy, the pedestrian detection ECU assembly will turn on the pop up hood warning indicator. However, unlike an ordinary malfunction, a DTC will not be stored. The pop up hood warning indicator cannot be manually turned off. It is necessary to replace the pedestrian detection ECU assembly with a new one.
