GRILLE SHUTTER SYSTEM


  1. FUNCTION OF MAIN COMPONENTS

    Item Function
    Radiator Shutter Sub-assembly The fins of the radiator shutter sub-assembly are closed by the swing grille actuator assembly to block the airflow to the engine compartment.
    Swing Grille Actuator Assembly

    • Actuates the radiator shutter sub-assembly based on the signal from the air conditioning amplifier assembly, hybrid vehicle control ECU and ECM.

    • Sends a diagnosis signal to the combination meter assembly when a malfunction is detected.
    Air Conditioning Amplifier Assembly Sends the A/C refrigerant pressure and outside temperature to the swing grille actuator assembly via CAN communication.
    Hybrid Vehicle Control ECU Sends a vehicle speed signal, inverter coolant temperature and shift B position request signal to the swing grille actuator assembly via CAN communication.
    ECM Sends an engine coolant temperature signal to the swing grille actuator assembly via CAN communication.
    Combination Meter Assembly Displays a message on the multi-information display to alert the driver with a signal provided by the swing grille actuator assembly.

  2. OPERATION


    1. Swing grille actuator assembly does the cold condition control while the engine coolant temperature and hybrid inverter coolant temperature is low.

    2. Swing grille actuator assembly does the high speed traveling control.

      Item Description
      Cold Condition Control When the power switch is ON (READY) at the engine coolant temperature is below 40°C (104°F), the grille shutter is closed until the engine coolant temperature at the 75°C (167°F).
      High Speed Traveling Control

      • Vehicle traveling speed is between approximately 37 to 93 mph (60 and 150 km/h), the grille shutter is closed.

      • When the vehicle is traveling and engine coolant temperature is approximately 97°C (207°F) or more, the grille shutter is opened.

      • When the vehicle is traveling and outside temperature is approximately 35°C (95°F) or more, the grille shutter is opened.

      • When the vehicle is traveling and air conditioning refrigerant pressure is high, the grill shutter opens and closes in accordance with the vehicle speed and the outside air temperature, etc.

      Tech Tips

      Sometimes, the grille shutter operates after the power switch turned on (IG) or turned off. This does not indicate a malfunction.

    1. Warning Indication


      1. The combination meter assembly uses the multi-information display, master warning light and buzzer to provide the driver with grille shutter system malfunction.

      2. When the system is not available, the following warning occurs to warn the driver.

        When a system malfunction is detected
        Multi-information Display Detail Master Warning Light Buzzer DTC

        Grille Shutter Inoperative.

        		 This message appears when the swing grille actuator assembly detects a system malfunction Illuminates Sounds once Repair is required DTCs are stored

        Grille Shutter not Initialized.

        Cancel Maintenance Mode.

        Tech Tips

        The maintenance mode can be cancelled using the Techstream or driving the vehicle. For details, refer to the Repair Manual.

  4. DIAGNOSIS


    1. If the air conditioning amplifier assembly detects a malfunction in the grille shutter system, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored in the air conditioning amplifier assembly.


      1. The 5-digit DTCs can be read by connecting the Global TechStream (GTS) to the DLC3. For details, refer to the Repair Manual.
