EXHAUST SYSTEM

  1. CONSTRUCTION

    1. The exhaust pipe assemblies are made of stainless steel in order to reduce weight, improve rust resistance, and enhance TWC warm-up capability.

    2. Ball joints are used to join the exhaust manifold to the front exhaust pipe assembly, and the front exhaust pipe assembly to the tail exhaust pipe assembly. As a result, in-vehicle sound has been muffled, vibration has been minimized, and high reliability has been realized.

    3. TWC are provided at the front of the front exhaust pipe assembly.

    4. A 2-way exhaust control system is provided to reduce noise and vibration from the main muffler.

  2. OPERATION

    1. Exhaust Heat Recirculation System

      1. The exhaust heat recirculation system (exhaust heat recovery unit) consists of a heat exchanger, exhaust gas control valve and exhaust gas control valve actuator.

      2. Engine coolant is circulated to the exhaust pipe in order to heat it. With this, the engine warm up time has been reduced and fuel economy is improved. Also, the time taken for the heater to become effective in winter is reduced.

      3. The exhaust gas control valve is opened or closed by a thermostat on the actuator. The exhaust gas control valve has a mechanism which automatically opens the valve when the engine coolant becomes hot.

        Exhaust Gas Control Valve Operation
When heat recovery is necessary The exhaust gas control valve is closed and exhaust gas flows through the heat exchanger and heats the engine coolant.
When power output is necessary The exhaust gas control valve is opened and exhaust gas flows normally. In this situation, almost no heat exchange is performed.

    2. 2-Way Exhaust Control System

      1. In order to maintain quietness, and allow for high exhaust efficiency and high engine power output, a 2-way exhaust system is used for the main muffler. A control valve is used inside the main muffler to open the exhaust gas passage using the exhaust gas pressure. The control valve closes at low engine speeds by means of a return spring.
