STEERING COLUMN SYSTEM

  1. CONSTRUCTION

    1. The energy absorbing mechanism of the steering column is mainly composed of the steering sliding with coupling yoke sub-assembly, No. 2 steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly, top plate, upper bracket, steering column upper tube, steering column upper shaft and breakaway pin.

    2. Primary Collision: The movement of the power steering gear assembly due to deformation of the body and frame during a collision is absorbed by the contraction and expansion of the steering sliding with coupling yoke sub-assembly and No. 2 steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly. This prevents the steering column assembly and steering wheel assembly from being pushed further into the vehicle interior.

    3. Secondary Collision: When the steering wheel assembly receives impact, the upper bracket moves forward along the slide groove of the top plate together with the steering column upper tube and steering column upper shaft. At this time, the top plate does not move as it is fixed in place by the instrument panel reinforcement, and the breakaway pin is severed by the force of the upper bracket movement. This ensures a survival space for the driver while contributing to the absorption of impact energy.
