BACK DOOR CLOSER SYSTEM

  1. FUNCTION OF MAIN COMPONENTS

    Component Function
Back Door Closer ECU (Multiplex Network Door ECU)*1 Controls the back door closer system in accordance with the signals received from the switches, sensors and ECUs.
Back Door Motor Unit (Power Back Door ECU)*2
Back Door Lock Assembly Back Door Closer Motor When the back door becomes ajar, this motor operates to automatically fully close the back door.
Sector Switch This switch detects the neutral position (initial position) of the back door closer motor and sector gear and outputs it to the back door closer ECU*1 or power back door ECU*2.
Pawl Switch This switch detects that the latch is opened and then closed and outputs a signal to the back door closer ECU*1 or power back door ECU*2.
Latch Switch This switch detects the ajar position of the latch and the fully closed position of the latch due to the closer operation and outputs a signal to the back door closer ECU*1 or power back door ECU*2.
Courtesy Switch This switch detects that the latch is fully closed and outputs a signal to the back door closer ECU*1 or power back door ECU*2.
Main Body ECU (Multiplex Network Body ECU) This ECU sends signals from the switches and ECUs to the back door closer ECU*1 or power back door ECU*2.
    Back Door Opener Switch Assembly
    • The back door can be opened by pressing this switch when the back door is fully closed.

    • The switch operation signal is output to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly).

Central Gateway ECU (Network Gateway ECU) Relays the signal between the CAN communication lines.
DLC3 The Global TechStream (GTS) can be connected to read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) of malfunctions.

  2. FUNCTION

    1. Close Operation

      Timing Chart
      [T] Component Operation Outline
Back door condition changes from open to ajar.
      (a) Latch Switch Changes from on to off The door is detected to be ajar.
Back Door Closer Motor Changes from off to normal rotation When an ajar condition is detected, the normal rotation relay turns on and a normal rotation operation starts.
      (b) Sector Switch Changes from on to off The back door closer motor and sector gear initial position detection is turned off.
      (c) Pawl Switch Changes from on to off The half-latch condition is detected
      (d) Courtesy Switch Changes from on to off The door is detected to be fully closed.
      (e) Pawl Switch Changes from on to off The full-latch condition is detected.
Back Door Closer Motor Changes from normal rotation to off When the full-latch condition is detected, the normal rotation relay turns off and the normal rotation operations stops.
      (f) Back Door Closer Motor Changes from off to reverse rotation Approximately 0.1 seconds after the back door closer motor is detected to be off, the reverse rotation relay turns on and a reverse rotation operation starts in order to return the back door closer motor and sector gear to the initial position.
      (g) Sector Switch Changes from off to on The back door closer motor and sector gear initial position is detected.
Back Door Closer Motor Changes from reverse rotation to off When the sector switch is detected to be on, the reverse rotation relay turns off and the reverse rotation operation stops.

      1. Release request during back door close operation (on signal input from back door opener switch assembly)

        • If an on signal is input from the back door opener switch assembly during a close operation, the back door closer ECU*1 or power back door ECU*2 stops the close operation and switches the back door close motor to a release operation.

    2. Release Operation

      Timing Chart
      [T] Component Operation Outline
Back door opener switch assembly is pressed with back door fully closed or ajar.
      (a) Back Door Opener Switch Assembly Changes from off to on User operation is detected.
Back Door Closer Motor Changes from off to reverse rotation When the back door opener switch assembly is detected to be on, the reverse rotation relay turns on and a reverse rotation operation starts.
      (b) Sector Switch Changes from on to off The back door closer motor and sector gear initial position detection is turned off.
      (c) Courtesy Switch Changes from on to off Fully closed detection is turned off.
The user opens the back door.
      (d) Latch Switch Changes from on to off Ajar detection is turned off.
Back Door Closer Motor Changes from reverse rotation to off When the latch switch is detected to be on, the reverse rotation relay turns off and the reverse rotation operation stops.*1
      (e) Back Door Closer Motor Changes from off to normal rotation Approximately 0.1 seconds after the back door closer motor is detected to be off, the normal rotation relay turns on and a normal rotation operation starts in order to return the back door closer motor and sector gear to the initial position.*2
      (f) Sector Switch Changes from off to on The back door closer motor and sector gear initial position is detected.
      (g) Back Door Closer Motor Changes from normal rotation to off When the sector switch is detected to be on, the normal rotation relay turns off and the normal rotation operation stops.

      Tech Tips

When a vehicle speed signal of approximately 3 km/h or higher is detected, release operations of the back door closer motor are prohibited.

*1: In cases such as when the user has not opened the back door, the operation stops when the latch switch is off for 1 second or more.

*2: In cases such as when the user has not opened the back door, the normal rotation operation is performed when approximately 3 seconds or more have elapsed after the operation stopped.

      1. Back door moves from open to ajar during back door release operation (input from latch switch changes from on to off)

        • If the back door closer ECU*1 or power back door ECU*2 detects that the latch switch is changing from on to off again during a release operation, it switches to a close operation.

  3. FAIL-SAFE

    1. When the back door closer ECU*1 or power back door ECU*2 detects a malfunction in parts such as a motor or sensor, the system enters fail-safe mode. Refer to the Repair Manual for details.
