BRAKE CONTROL SYSTEM

  1. SYSTEM CONTROL

    1. Hill-start Assist Control

      1. When the vehicle starts off on a steep or slippery hill, it may start to descend backward while the driver switches from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal, thus making it difficult for the vehicle to start off. To prevent this from occurring, the hill-start assist control temporarily (approximately 2 seconds at the maximum) applies the brakes to all 4 wheels in order to prevent the vehicle from descending backward.

      2. Without the hill-start assist control, the driver must quickly and precisely switch from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal. With the hill-start assist control, however, the driver can start off easily and operate the pedal in a relaxed manner, because the hill-start assist control prevents the vehicle from descending backward.

      3. Hill-start Assist Control Activation Conditions

        • The skid control ECU judges if the vehicle is on an uphill incline based on signals from the deceleration sensor, and activates Hill-start Assist Control when the vehicle is started with all of the following conditions met.

        Control Activation Conditions

        • The shift lever is in any position other than P or N (Climbing with the front or rear of the vehicle toward the hilltop).

        • The vehicle is at a standstill.

        • The accelerator pedal is not depressed.

        • The parking brake is released.

      4. Hill-start Assist Control Cancelation Conditions

        • If any of the following conditions is met, Hill-start Assist Control operation is canceled.

        Control Cancelation Conditions

        • The shift lever is moved to P or N.

        • The accelerator pedal is depressed.

        • The parking brake is operated.

        • Approximately 2 seconds elapse since the operation started.

    2. Downhill Assist Control

      1. When the vehicle is descending a steep hill and engine braking alone cannot provide a sufficient deceleration force while the transaxle is in the D, L or R range, the downhill assist control performs 4-wheel brake control to maintain a constant, low vehicle speed. Thus, the vehicle is able to descend in a stable manner without causing the wheels to lock.

      2. When the vehicle descends a steep hill without the downhill assist control, the driver must pay close attention to the operation of the brake and accelerator pedal. However, with the downhill assist control, the driver can concentrate on steering the vehicle without concentrating on operating the accelerator or brake pedal.

      3. The downhill assist control enables the vehicle to achieve a high level of stability because it can descend a slippery hill at low speeds without causing the wheels to lock.

      4. Downhill Assist Control Activation Conditions

        • Downhill assist control operates when all of the following conditions have been met.

        Control Activation Conditions

        • The downhill assist control switch is on.

        • The shift position is in D, L or R.

        • The accelerator and brake pedals are not depressed.

        • The vehicle is descending down a hill at a vehicle speed of 25 km/h (16 mph) or less.

      5. Downhill Assist Control Cancelation Conditions

        • Downhill assist control does not operate under the conditions described below even if the downhill assist control switch is turned on. In this case, the downhill assist control indicator light blinks to alert the driver.

        Control Cancelation Conditions

        • The shift position is in a position other than D, L or R.

        • A malfunction occurs in the downhill assist control system.

        • The temperature of the brake actuator rises, causing downhill assist control operation to stop.

      6. Downhill Assist Control Cancelation Conditions (Gradual Cancelation)

        • Under the condition described below, downhill assist control gradually decreases hydraulic pressure to stop downhill assist control operation. During cancelation operation, the downhill assist control indicator light blinks to alert the driver.

The downhill assist control switch is turned off during downhill assist control operation.
