CONSTRUCTION
The intake air surge tank assembly is made of plastic to realize a lightweight construction.
The intake air surge tank assembly consists of upper and lower sections and contains an intake air control valve. This valve is activated by the Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) and is used to alter the intake pipe length to improve engine performance in all engine speed ranges.
The ACIS actuator uses an electric actuator and is laser-welded onto the intake air surge tank assembly. Many of the components are made of plastic for weight reduction.

Tech Tips
Laser-welding: In laser-welding, a laser-absorbing material (intake air surge tank assembly) is joined to a material that allows the laser light to pass through the ACIS actuator. Laser beams are then transmitted from the ACIS actuator side. The beams penetrate the ACIS actuator material to heat and melt the surface of the laser-absorbing material. Then, the heat of the laser-absorbing material melts the ACIS actuator material and causes both materials to become welded.
