OUTLINE
To achieve low emissions and enhanced fuel economy, the stop and start system has been developed.
The stop and start system automatically stops the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop, such as when the vehicle stops at a red traffic light. When starting off, the engine is automatically restarted without requiring any extra activity from the driver. (models with CVT)
The stop and start system automatically stops the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop, such as when the vehicle stops at a red traffic light. When starting off, the engine is automatically restarted when the clutch pedal is depressed, without requiring any extra activity from the driver. (models with manual transaxle)
The stop and start system consists of an engine stop and start ECU, backup boost converter and tandem solenoid starter assembly. (models with CVT)
The stop and start system consists of an engine stop and start ECU with a bult-in backup boost converter and an starter assembly. (models with maual transaxle)
The adoption of the tandem solenoid starter assembly enables the engine to start even when the engine is still rotating under inertia. (models with CVT)
Based on signals from various sensors, switches, and the ECM, the engine stop and start ECU controls the stopping and starting of the engine.
When the engine is stopped, the ECM stores the crankshaft angle. This is used to determine which cylinder to inject fuel into and ignite the next time the engine is restarted. This shortens the amount of time necessary to restart the engine.
To allow management of the lifespan of the starter assembly, the engine stop and start ECU counts the number of times the starter operates. If the number exceeds a threshold, the ECU blinks the stop and start cancel indicator light to inform the driver that a replacement is required.
Tech Tips
After the starter assembly has been replaced, it is necessary to clear the record of the number of times that the starter assembly has been operated. For details, refer to the Repair Manual.
During idling stop, the electric oil pump for CVT operates to ensure a stable CVT oil pressure, realizing a smooth start off. (models with CVT)
A hill-start assist function is provided in order to assist smooth starting on a slope while the engine is restarted after idling stop. The skid control ECU retains the brake hydraulic pressure until sufficient driving force is generated. (models with CVT)
Operating conditions of the stop and start system, such as the amount of time idling stop was performed, and various advice and warnings are provided using the multi-information display, stop and start indicator light and stop and start cancel indicator light in the combination meter assembly.
Through the use of a high performance battery and high-precision battery sensor (battery state sensor assembly), the amount of time until the threshold value for idle stop prohibition is reached has been extended and the idle stop operation permission range has been expanded.
Stop and start operation time when the air conditioning is operating can be changed between "Normal" and "Extended (the stop and start system has priority)" using the steering pad switch located on the steering pad, enabling the user to select the preferred setting. However, even when selecting "Extended (the stop and start system has priority)", the idling stop time may not depending on the vehicle condition or the surrounding environment.
PRECAUTION
While the engine is stopped due to stop and start system operation (while the stop and start indicator light is on), depress the brake pedal and set the parking brake when necessary. Unexpected accidents may occur due to the automatic engine start function.
While the engine is stopped due to stop and start system operation (while the stop and start indicator light is on), do not allow anyone to leave the vehicle. Unexpected accidents may occur due to the automatic engine start function.
Ignition Switch Expressions
The type of ignition switch used on this model differs depending on the specifications of the vehicle. The expressions listed in the table below are used in this section.
| Expression | Ignition Switch (Position) | Engine Switch (Condition) |
|---|---|---|
| Ignition Switch off | LOCK | Off (Lock) |
| Ignition Switch ACC | ACC | On (ACC) |
| Ignition Switch ON | ON | On (IG) |
| Engine Start | START | On (Start) |
