OUTLINE
An EC65A 6-speed Multi-mode Manual Transaxle (M-MT) is used.
The M-MT is a manual transaxle with a clutch actuator assembly and shift and select actuator assembly. The operation of the clutch actuator assembly and shift and select actuator assembly are controlled by the TCM.
The M-MT uses a shift-by-wire system in which the TCM changes gears using actuators in accordance with the shift lever position that has been detected through the shift lever position sensor and the transmission shift main switch in the floor shift lock control unit assembly.
The M-MT has 2 modes (E-mode and M-mode). As a result, good fuel efficiency, ease of driving (in E-mode) and sporty driving (in M-mode) are realized.
The E-mode shifts automatically to suit the driving conditions. In E-mode, the driver can select from 2 shift patterns: (normal [E] pattern and sporty [Es] pattern). The normal [E] pattern is always selected when the engine is started.
The M-mode allows the driver to manually operate the shift lever and shift paddle switch (transmission shift switch assembly) to shift gears without applying the clutch.
A gear shift indicator system is used.

When removing or installing any part related to the M-MT system, perform the 4 general service steps indicated below to reset the system:
Clutch line bleeding
Initialization of TCM
M-MT system learning
Synchronization position calibration
Since a concentric slave cylinder (CSC) is used in the clutch system, it is necessary to bleed the clutch fluid lines after a clutch related part has been replaced or the transaxle or engine has been removed.
The clutch hydraulic system needs to be functioning properly before performing other general service procedures, such as initialization of TCM and M-MT system learning. Therefore, bleed the clutch fluid lines before performing these other procedures. For details, refer to the Repair Manual.
Perform the 3 general service procedures (initialization of TCM, M-MT system learning and synchronization position calibration) upon completion of the removal and reinstallation of any part related to the M-MT system. For details, refer to the Repair Manual.
| General Service Procedure | Outline |
|---|---|
| Initialization of TCM | The TCM stores the calibration/learned values for actuator positions, clutch synchronization position, data and DTCs. This information in the TCM can be initialized through one of the following methods:
|
| M-MT System Learning | Adjusts the clutch clamp position accurately including all related parts on the vehicle. Each part has a tolerance and is designed to have a certain range of stroke in the clutch clamp position, This operation calibrates the actual clamp position. |
| Checks the accuracy of the shift position of the shift and select actuator assembly by operating the actuators for shift and select. If the initial gear is shifted to the target one, the TCM learns the actual standard position for the shift and select side. | |
| Initialization of TCM must be performed before M-MT system learning. M-MT system learning can be performed through either of the following methods:
|
|
| Synchronization Position Calibration | After performing initialization and learning, synchronization position calibration of the parts of the transaxle is performed under actual driving. The TCM learns the actual standard position as the standard value for smooth shifting. |
| To perform synchronization position calibration, drive the vehicle in M-mode, shift up from 1st to 6th, and shift down from 6th to 1st at the specified vehicle speed for each shifting condition. |
