  1. FUNCTION


    1. The compound gear unit is composed of Motor Generator No. 1 (MG1) mainly working as a generator, Motor Generator No. 2 (MG2) mainly working as a power source, the power split device for splitting the engine output and motor output into power to drive MG1 and to drive the wheels, the reduction gear which reduces the speed of the MG2 output, the input shaft, the intermediate shaft and the output shaft.

    2. By using the power split device, engine output is split into power to drive MG1 and to drive the wheels. The engine output is input through the input shaft and transmitted from the planetary carrier of the power split device through the pinion gear to the sun gear connected to MG1 and the ring gear connected to the intermediate shaft. Also, when the engine is started, MG1 output is transmitted to the engine so that MG1 functions as a starter.

    3. MG2 output is transmitted from the sun gear of the reduction gear connected to MG2 through the pinion gear to the planetary carrier connected to the output shaft.
