HYBRID TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

  1. FUNCTION

    1. The sequential shiftmatic system enables the driver to select an appropriate gear among 6 stages of engine braking force by operating the shift lever or shift paddles. By controlling the engine, MG1 and MG2, this system improves the generation response of the engine braking force. In addition, the engine speed is controlled to maintain high speeds, enhancing acceleration response when the driver steps on the accelerator pedal.

    2. By moving the shift lever to S, the automatic shifting mode will be switched to sequential shiftmatic mode. By operating the "+" shift paddle or moving the shift lever to "+", driving in the shift range (from S1 through S6) selected by the driver is possible, and the acceleration characteristics will be switched in response to the shift range.

Acceleration Characteristics when in Sequential Shiftmatic Mode
      Shift Range Characteristics
Low Shift Range Driving force between the accelerator pedal intermediate area and the fully depressed position is increased, improving the vehicle response to the driver's operation.
High Shift Range Driving force changes in accordance with accelerator operation amount changes have been decreased more than normal, thus enhancing accelerator control making it easy to maintain the vehicle speed during constant-speed cruising.

      Tech Tips

The sequential shiftmatic system is not designed to enhance maximum vehicle speed or maximum power performance. Also, when in sequential shiftmatic mode, accelerator characteristics available for SPORT mode, ECO mode and SNOW mode are disabled.

    3. The shift range position is displayed on the multi-information display in the combination meter assembly to inform the driver of shift range selection conditions.

  2. OPERATION

    1. Sequential shiftmatic mode can be selected by moving the shift lever from D to S. In this mode, the shift range can be switched between S1 and S6 by moving the shift lever to "+" or "-" or operating the "+" or "-" shift paddle. The lower the shift range, the larger the engine braking force and the larger the driving force between the accelerator pedal intermediate area and the fully depressed position.

    2. When sequential shiftmatic mode is selected with the shift lever in D, a shift range is automatically selected in response to the driving conditions and deceleration speed is optimally controlled. In SPORT mode, a lower gear is selected than in NORMAL mode and a larger engine braking force is obtained.

    3. When sequential shiftmatic mode is selected with the shift lever in D or S, the transmission will be shifted to the highest shift range by holding the shift lever in "+" or pulling and holding the "+" shift paddle for a certain period of time.

    4. When a shift range between S1 and S4 is selected, upshifting will be performed depending on the vehicle speed.

    5. Limitations regarding the sequential shiftmatic system

      1. Upon receiving a downshifting request issued by the driver through the operation of the shift lever or "-" shift paddle, this system limits the switching of the shift range if the vehicle speed exceeds the limit speed, and informs the driver by sounding the buzzer in the combination meter assembly.

        Limit Speed for Downshifting
Downshift Request Limit Speed (Reference Value)
        6 → 5 -
        5 → 4 163 km/h (101 mph)
        4 → 3 126 km/h (78 mph)
        3 → 2 88 km/h (55 mph)
        2 → 1 51 km/h (32 mph)
