DIFFERENTIAL SYSTEM GENERAL

  1. OUTLINE

    1. Front Differential (AWD Models)

      1. A VD19C type front differential is used.

    2. Rear Differential

      1. An FD21A type rear differential is used on all models except F SPORT. A pre-torque mechanism is used for the differential to improve the initial acceleration performance of the vehicle on slippery road surfaces.

      2. An FD21AT type rear differential with TORSEN* Limited Slip Differential (LSD) is used on F SPORT. By optimally distributing drive force in accordance with acceleration operation, a high level of traction performance, operability and driving stability have been achieved.

        Tech Tips

*: TORSEN is a JTEKT registered trade mark.

      3. A lightweight carrier with optimized thickness and a streamlined rib are used.

      4. Low viscosity oil is used, thus improving fuel consumption.

  3. MAIN FEATURES

    1. TORSEN LSD

      1. The TORSEN LSD responds well to changes in the road surface when driving straight, thus ensuring straight-line stability.

        A01GE5WE01
      2. The TORSEN LSD reacts in a direction which limits the differential between the left and right wheels, thus distributing the coast torque generated by engine braking from the inner wheel to the outer wheel when decelerating during turning. As a result, yaw moment is generated at the rear axle opposite to the turning direction, thus ensuring vehicle stability.

      3. The TORSEN LSD distributes the motive force from the inner wheel to the outer wheel when accelerating during turning. As a result, yaw moment is generated at the rear axle in the turning direction, thus achieving a high level of traction performance and operability.

  4. PRECAUTION

    1. TORSEN LSD

      1. Do not add drive force with only one of the rear wheels on the ground or with one of the rear wheels spinning. The structure of the TORSEN LSD transmits drive force to the stopped wheel, which may cause the vehicle to move suddenly without any warning. Also, the differential mechanism may suffer damage in the above situation, possibly leading to a malfunction.

      2. For the left and right rear wheels, equip tires of the same type and size which have roughly similar amounts of wear.
