POWER STEERING SYSTEM GENERAL

  1. OUTLINE

    1. A vehicle speed sensing type Electric Power Steering (EPS) system is used.

    2. This system generates assist torque using a power steering motor and a reduction mechanism that are mounted on the steering column assembly to assist the driver's steering.

    3. A brush type power steering motor is used on base models.

    4. A brushless type power steering motor is used on models other than base models.

    5. An electric load control is used. This control prevents the assist torque from decreasing when the battery voltage decreases.

    6. A rack and pinion type steering gear assembly is used.

    7. The power steering ECU assembly is integrated into the power steering motor.

  2. SPECIFICATION

Power Steering Type Electric Power Steering (EPS)
Steering Gear Type Rack and Pinion
Rack Stroke mm (in.) 152 (6.0)
No. of Turns Lock to Lock 2.85*1, 3.21*2
Steering Gear Ratio (Overall) 18.3*1, 18.5*2
    • *1: Base model

    • *2: Except base models

  3. MAIN FEATURES

    1. The EPS system has the following features:

      1. The EPS system activates the power steering motor only when the driver turns the steering wheel. This reduces the energy consumption when the vehicle is going straight, resulting in excellent fuel economy.

      2. The torque sensor, power steering ECU assembly, power steering motor and reduction mechanism are integrated into the steering column assembly, giving a simple and compact structure.

      3. Unlike a conventional hydraulic power steering system, this system excels in serviceability because it does not require pipes, vane pump, pulley, or power steering fluid.
